And the next Perry plastic set is...
« on: 16 April 2016, 04:30:11 PM »
... American Civil War Union infantry. Just previewed at Salute with no release date so far.

Pics to follow, but for those of a curious disposition they're in advancing/attacking poses with the same arm options as the Confederate set (i.e right shoulder shift and at porte), though a couple of new loading arm pairs have been thrown into the mix as well.

Thanks Arthur. Had a quick chat with Michael at Salute today, and he said:

- Yes, they will definitely be doing HYW plastic mounted knights. Haven't started them yet, but on the cards in the not too distant future.
- Maybe to plastic Pathans. He said they'd be a lot of fun to do, but based on the Mahdist set, wasn't sure how well they'd sell. (I told him I was sure they would :D)
- Zulu War British colonial infantry in the works and coming quite soon.
- ACW Union infantry in dynamic poses. Underway, but no release date.

I asked if he got sick of people asking / speculating about what was coming next, and he said 'no, not really' - but that they were now trying to promise things less far in advance, and to only preview / announce new products when there was a realistic chance of delivering on them fairly promptly. Which I think is probably a good strategy  :)

The plastic Mahdists might sell better now there are plastic opponents for them.
Plastic Pathans would be even better - lots of scope anyway and with opponents already available.

Will the box have a bugler?  Or more drummers?

- Maybe to plastic Pathans.

Oh. I hope they will make them with jezzail/Henry Martini/Lee-Enfield/Mosin-Nagat alternative guns.

I'm guessing the Prussian box set did not sell enough to justify them. I remember seeing the greens for the Reservists on the plastic workbench section of the Perry web page and they looked pretty nice.

I'd guess that something popular like these, which I think a lot of people have been asking for, likely help fund other plastic sets that others may find interesting but are not as commercially viable.

Maybe.
Sadly, given the (reputed) £10K+ investment required to get a plastic set off the blocks, if something doesn't look commercially viable, I doubt it'll get produced.
In a way I'm not surprised the Mahdist set, lovely as it is, hasn't produced the return Michael and Alan were looking for. Of all the major colonial settings, popular as the Sudan is, it's still probably the most esoteric. I think plastic Zulus, Pathans or Boers would have fared much better. Hopefully we'll see some or all of these in glorious Perry Plastic one day  :)

Must admit, I've never been into ACW, and I'm really not sure of the substantial uniform differences between Federal and Confederate forces. I'm sure it matters to enthusiasts for the period. For the generalist though, the original idea of plastic sets which would do for either side, painted blue or grey (I suppose that should be gray :)) seemed a good way to go. I look at the Confederate infantry set, and the greens for this new Union infantry set, and to my untutored eye, I can't tell much difference. But I'm sure ACW enthusiasts will. And there are definitely a lot of ACW enthusiasts out there, so pretty sure this will sell well...
