Don't roll so lousy. Or maybe your guy wasn't all he was cracked up to be? I bet it made for a funny narrative though.
The Rustic klutz could have been rated as a d8 to better reflect his untrained abilities. Use of cards helps. Play a 2-eyed Jack for a additional +1 in Close Combat. There's a few traits that could help.

He wasn’t an untrained klutz, he was a seasoned smuggler used to brawling. Richards pompous Dragoon captain clearly underestimated his opponent and paid the price for it. ;) lol

Next time we’ll give him a couple of traits to increase his abilities as well.

Happy to play rustic klutz again - I believe my sturdy fellow was well versed in teaching upstart dragoon officers lessons in back side kicking  lol

Did we mention the other "rustic" with the pair of pistols ?  ;)

Another recruit for the Scarecrow's men. He doesn't have a suitable name yet. Any suggestions?

Another scary addition. 8)

Given the colours you’ve chosen and the others all being named after marshland wildlife, I think you should go for

Warbler

After the Reed Warbler

Great project, well executed, and a great looking game.  I've always thought that Dr. Syn/Scarecrow had a lot of gaming potential.  I'm sure you said somewhere, but what rules are you using?

Fistful of Lead, horse and musket version with a couple of additions from our Gothic Horror version, namely the ability for the Scarecrow to cause fear. They are a perfect set of rules for this. :)

This is true, but since you suggested it I googled wildlife on Romney Marsh and found the Wagtail is a native, but couldn’t see a Warbler, so I’ve renamed him. ;) lol
