How to fix foliage to trees?
« on: 08 June 2016, 12:56:29 AM »
I've got a variety of cheap trees imported from China courtesy of eBay, and the foliage is, bit by bit, coming loose. What is the best way to fix it to the tree frames? I was thinking maybe a spray varnish, or a mix of PVA glue and water through a spray bottle, or perhaps even hairspray?

Have other people attempted to tackle this problem, and if so what worked for you?

Dip them in PVA white glue diluted with 30-50% water.

I can't find it at the moment but there is a pretty big post about making trees somewhere on the LAF and the author suggests clear plasti dip.

In the states it is available from several different diy stores.  Here in the UK I have not found it in the shops but it is available online.  It is clear spray on latex plastic that is suppose to knock almost all the shedding on the head.  Hope that helps.

Superglue.
Stick it on one clump at a time.

Superglue is great. If you're careful you can use a hot glue gun and press clumps in (yes, be careful!). These are both much stronger than the PVA/scenic cement I've found.

I've had success spraying with watered down PVA.

Yup, I used hairspray on my cheap Chinese trees (about the only use I have for hairspray nowadays...)

I've used watered down PVA too. I was a bit sceptical at first, but it goes on well. I tried both a spray bottle and a dropper, and found the dropper worked best, as the spray bottle became gummed up.

Once it dries you can't see it, and it keeps the foliage on.
