New Technology For the British exploration of Venus
« on: January 18, 2009, 06:07:29 PM »
When Lord Belborough financed the Royal Geographical Society's first expedition to Venus he designed, engineered and contructed giant steam powered walking machines at his factiores in the north of England, suitable for the harsh enviroments of the planet.

These goliaths were capable of striding through the dense jungles and swamps of Venus, keeping the occupants  high enough off the ground to be safe from the miriad of predators that menaced the forest floors below and also provide the passengers splendid views from the large observation decks high above the tree canopy.

Little did Lord Belborough know that Admiral,The Lord Ivor Mough-D'Iver of Her Majesty's (Gaud Bless 'Er) Royal Navy would requisition these Steam striders as ideal conveyances to transport troops rapidly into action.

They were lightly equipped with machine guns and other small arms including Faraday Lightning cannons. The occupants could also poor devastating rifle fire down on unfortunate enemies from the relative safety of the observation decks.

Below.... Admiral, The Lord Ivor Mough-D'iver inspecting weapons drill aboard the protoype A class Belborough Steam Walker equipped with twin Gardner rapid fire machine guns.

Nice one Nick. Those Wills girder panels are getting plenty of use for various Venus projects, as will the Wild Wild West walker legs.... ;)

Not as elegant as some contraptions from that period, but very cool, and beautifully painted.

Lovely! It has just the right " funded and built independantly by a private concern" look, rather than the grimly efficient sort built by HM Government.

Excellent stuff! I like the blue/grey of the panels. What did you use for the effect? I may have to shamelessly steal it for the light armoured walkers of mine.
So many projects..... so little time.......

Its a straight forward three/four colour approach. A fairly heavy drybrush  with Codex grey, (over black undercoat) then  Foundry mid blue A, then mid blue C further drybrush, then a light final drybrush over the edges with Foundry light blue A. It then gets a liberal wash over the joins, rivets etc with watered down brown ink, for stains and rust.
The bare metal legs are gunmetal over Black base coat with brown ink wash and GW graveyard earth drybrush for mud effects.

Very nice, but what happens if someone gets underneath?
And in the fury of this darkest hour
We will be the light
You've asked me for my sacrifice
And I am Winter born

Very Nice.
Query, how did you make the undercarraige?  The part that has the legs attached?
Overall very nice, but is there a pilot house, or did I just not see who is driving the thing?
My image of Venus is very Jurasic, ie dinosaurs etc.  Potentially terradactyl flying creatures.  The use of Nordenfelts is perfect.  They could be used take care of both land based and flying beasties.  Otherwise the vehicle might be looked upon as a mobile snack tray by some Venusian bird of prey.
