Well, i've finally done it. First figure conversions begun for GoT....

Firstly, let me acknowledge the inspiration i've found here.

Secondly, where am I? I began yesterday, with some of the Perry Men-at-Arms and their dismounted knights set. In addition, i've used some of the excellent Frostgrave soldiers - in effect, they'll be a mixed group of Nothern 'Bidowers'.

Modifications so far have been simple - swapping around heads and hands, and the most time-consuming, the addition of cloaks to 16  of the figures. I've used Magic-Sculp for the cloaks which are of two types - fur for the northern houses and more simple forms for what will be a unit of Lannister Heavy Infantry.

Now, i've used Magic Sculp before. In a previous life my main interest was 1/35th scale and i've done a fair number of heavy modifications to existing commercial figures. This though, is my first attempt at 28mm conversions (something which has been my main modeling inspiration for the last year or so).

One thing that is worth passing on, is that I bought a cheap roller (around 10cm wide) a few years ago which I use to roll out very thin sheets of Magic-Sculp. Now, to stop it sticking, I use some cheap talc which works perfectly. Also, to smooth down rough areas, a Nº 5 brush and some water is sufficient.

Texturing for fur can be done in two ways - either with a pointed tool such as a cocktail stick, or, more convincincly (and quicker, with an old toothbrush.

Sounds interesting! I look forward to seeing your work.    I like the idea of a tooth brush for "brushing" the fur texture into big areas like cloaks, never heard of that before.

I agree. That trick sounds well worth exploring for fur cloaks!

Adding to the technique, if the sculpting putty comes out as too smooth, put a layer of plastic putty on top (I like the Vallejo plastic putty) and use the toothbrush to gently stipple it....
