Colors of French Foreign Legion during this period?
« on: 26 June 2016, 07:01:30 PM »
Just wondering two things:

1) They wore shorter jackets than during the Beau Geste period, but were they ever blue?  Or always that medium-dark brown?

2) Anyone know a good Citadel or Vallejo color for that brown jacket?

Thanks!

Thanks, but blue on the short-length jackets, too?  Like the older Artizan Design FFL guys?

I am almost 100 % sure, that the uniform was a  sandy khaki colour and the coat that was formerly blue turned into a brownish color

Officially the 1920 regulation specified 2 uniforms;
Summer: Sand Khaki overall with White fatigues,
Winter: Mustard Khaki overall over white fatigues
Both with the Mustard Khaki greatcoat and Blue Kepi with (usually bleached white) sand khaki cover worn without neck curtain. Blue waistsash was also worn for parades but not in the field.

Tonkin based units had a different Light Khaki uniform with Colonial helmet.

Leather equipment was the 1915 brown style straps and pouches.

But in practice the Interwar FFL uniforms were a mix of existing stock (French and US) and new. Horizon Blue WW1 era uniforms were issued to recruits in Europe as were stocks of the American Army Dark Khaki uniform left behind in France at the end of WW1.

Some of the North African service units still used the Blue/Grey Winter Uniform but were mainly in the Sand/Khaki tunic and trousers, white (or white/blue stripe) shirt with Greatcoat and puttees in Mustard Khaki. Black leather equipment was common.

Are you looking for a specific campaign or a "generic" FFL unit?

Thanks, guys.

I'm looking for interwar Algeria, or causing-trouble-in-Africa in general.

The figures are the Artizan Designs ones with the short jackets, not the Beau Geste ones.  Dressed like these guys, though I think they're Perry, not Artizan.

Here are the Artizan ones I have:

Just need to know if I *must* repaint my few blue-coated ones because there were no short jackets in blue, only brown.

you must repaint them ...

no more blue jackets in the interwar period ...
Dans les situations critiques, quand on parle avec un calibre bien en pogne, personne ne conteste plus. Y'a des statistiques là-dessus.

ErikB, you also might want to check out the history of any FFL actions that took place in Lebanon or Syria during the interwar period. I don't know about this myself, but I used to play with a guy who converted figures to use for FFL in Lebanon in the 1920's. (Don't need to convert now, since the figures are available.)

Alright, anyone know a good Citadel or Vallejo color for the jackets?

I'm at a loss trying to differentiate that jacket from the leather webbing.
