40k kitbashed large spacecraft - finished photos on P2.
« on: 28 June 2016, 04:06:06 PM »
So, I've been collecting junk GW kits and Forgeworld miscast parts on eBay for a few yew years now, with the idea of making a few larger civilian cargo ships as scenery for my 'Port Imperiale' Rogue trader background.

I've finally got around to building a couple, so here they are:

'Rover' Class Light Cargo Lugger.

I did this one as crashed, as it fits in with my 40k background, having been attacked by pirates and forced to crash land on the planet, before being raided and stripped of valuables:

And the second, larger 'Maelstrom' Class Lugger:

With this one, I've gone for a ship that's landed and is in the process of being loaded/unloaded. As you can see from the back, there's a large set of open doors, with a ramp into a huge cargo bay that takes up almost the entire ship. Armaments are minimal, so in dangerous areas it needs to run in a convoy with fighters to offer protection.

Parts-wise, there are bits of Thunderhawk transport in there, and most of a Caestus Assault Ram, along with bits of Storm Raven, Valkyrie, Inquisitor Scenery and even the odd bit of Ork Trukk, as well as some scratch-built parts!

Wonderful stuff.  Excellent job - and nice scale (nice to see some genuinely proper scaled ships - I know as wargamers we tend to reduce to "comfortable" table size stuff which eventually just looks comically out of scale).

They're really cool! 8)

The wreckage just has the 'right' amount of damage and the cargo ship reminds me of a cool Eagle Lander.

That "Maelstrom' Class Lugger" is just awesome. Congratulations on a great work  :o

Thanks! I'm very pleased with it. The Rover class still looked a bit too Thunderhawk-y, but this really doesn't look anything like it's component parts.

I'm now desperately trying to work out what colour to paint it!

That's quite impressive.  Really looking forward to seeing what you come up with for your setting.  I've also been stockpiling aircraft for potential 28mm terrain. Mostly toys and Dust Tactics flyers.

Really well done! I'm dipping a toe back into 40k after many years away from the setting, so it's inspiring to see stuff like this. I like the idea of developing your own setting. Like you, my "40k ideal" falls somewhere between the look and feel of Rogue Trader and 2nd edition.

Patrick, welcome to the club!  There is a pretty large nostalgia movement for gaming 40K as we wish...when we wish.  I've been enjoying getting back into 2nd ed (we'll be messing around with the rules a bit).  Come on in, the water's fine (and filled with nurgle)

I didn't even know that there was a miscasts market over eBay. You just shook my world. Absolutely amazing work there!

They don't turn up too often, I just had a search set for 'Forgeworld' and kept an eye out. I'm assuming that FW just send out replacements for faulty parts, I've been lucky enough not to have anything faulty from them yet!

I, too, did not know they listed miscast items on eBay. I'll have to look into that. Great looking stuff...outstanding work ;)

Great builds and good to see something for 40k that's not off the shelf  8)

A light grey suitably weathered would probably do with some markings in another, bright colour.

cheers

James
