T34 in 1/56th scale scratch build
« on: January 22, 2009, 10:33:45 PM »
I thought I'd post a few photos of my T34 scratch build now underway for JTFM.  The scale is 1/56th

Sorry to complain. The level of you work is outstanding but the last photo does not look right. Are the turrets the right scale? Especially the 85mm turret it looks a bit long for the body of the tank. I am no expert I am just comparing it to 1/72 scale ones I have.
I am extremely jealous of people with your obvious level of skill when scratch building items like this.
Again sorry for the complaint

Gamer Mac,

Thanks for your observation - I had to do a couple more measurements to double check my proportions.  I think my turret is well within the range of acceptability!  It seems my camera creates something of a fish-eye effect at close range making the turrets appear too big.    Here is a different angle along with another illustration from this excellent website (http://www.o5m6.de/)

Latest update,  nearly finished with only track and final fitting of parts.  It should be done and off to the caster early next week.

Thats amazing stuff. I tried to scratch build a hetzer in 1/56 and it was a disaster. I boned up on the techniques, got some tools and proceeded to slice up some plasticard. To make a long story short, I just could get anything right, everything was a milimeter off, or the edges were too rough, or it wasn't perfectly straight, and there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Seeing your work makes me want to give it another shot. Incredible!

The trick is to start with a good set of drawings and follow the measurements as exactly as possible, be patient then "measure twice, cut once"

It should be available from JTFM some time this spring.

Hi John,

Terrific finish to the project on the T34. I see from the photo that you can slot in a BAM Soviet crew member so that is good too.

Thanks again for your updates.

I'm very pleased with how the hex turret turned out - I ended up reworking the cast turret so that one is even better then in previous photos
