WSS British dragoons question
« on: 21 July 2016, 02:58:09 PM »
In the War of the Spanish Succession, had the British dragoons gone over to fighting as cavalry, or were they still used on foot?

Well In the battle of Almenar (1707) in Catalonia they fought as cavalry.
I think that the same happened in Almansa

For the British, almost exclusively as (lighter) cavalry

Used in both roles by Marlborough during his campaigns.  my understanding is that they were still very much mounted infantry but becoming used in both roles.
In wargaming as in life - don't accept cheap imitations

Thanks guys. Grim Mariner can you give an example of a battle in which they were used in a dismounted role?

I'll answer my own question.  :-D

I did some research on the regiments and there are detailed records of the combat history of the Scots Greys in the WSS.  They fought at several of the big engagements on foot.  Thanks Grim Mariner.

Also applies to the French.  For example the troops holding franquenee at Ramillies.

Sorry it took a while to reply but been away on holiday.
