How to make a Cave?
« on: August 06, 2016, 08:58:53 PM »
OK confession time.  My modelling skills are very limited.  However I need a mountainous cave as a strongpoint for a 25mm Hordes of the Things army.  I can't see anything commercially.  Base dimensions are up between 120mm and 180mm width/depth (it does not have to be square).

Any thoughts on materials/ methods of construction?

Here's a link to a build I made.

Nothing fancy. Basically I used bark chips to create the stone look.

Hardboard base. Could easily be MDF/plasticard/cardboard/matte board etc.
Block of foam. Resin entrance but could just as easily be made from putty/clay/Miliput etc.
Small rocks (garden stones) around the base.
Liberal coating of sand and PVA mix.
Sprinkle on some grit before it dries.
Paint and add static grass.
Obviously you wouldn't need the resin figure on top, replace with more rocks.
Half an hour to make, over night to dry then paint with a big brush.

Cave entrance apeture is about 25mm high.

I like the mound and the figure - well done.

Chickened out of the difficult modelling stuff :o

Got a lump of rock from a garden centre with an appropriate cave sized hole in it for £1.49

Not only do I have a HOTT stronghold for my cavemen I also have a useful anti intruder device for the home (my thumb fits into the cave quite nicely) :D :D

Thanks for the posts folks
