(AP 2016) 21 Panzerdivision StuG Batterie
« on: 07 August 2016, 05:32:33 PM »
I finally decided to take the Flames of War Army box for the 21 Panzerdivision StuG Batterie  down from the shelf that it has lain neglected on for I can't remember how long.  Together with an Anti Aircraft Platoon that has also been languishing up there, I should be able to complete enough units each month.

First batch completed:  2 Stug Platoons and the Company Commander (3x7.5 cm and 4 10.5cm)

Just realised that I didn't post last month's picture.....

So, to remedy that; here is an Armoured Artillery Platoon:

Very nice, the camo and decals really make these pop. Nice photo set-ups too.

(I've recently had a renewed interest in 15mm WWII/FoW miniatures and painting a platoon or two at a time is refreshing.)

I agree - very nice painting. Question on your decals - they seem a little bright. Do you seal them (and/or use a decal softener)?

Thanks for the comments Dr Mathias and von Lucky.

I varnish after decal application, but had not thought about using anything else.  What would you suggest?

I've had real issues with the decals, they never come off the backing sheet in a single piece, so I spend quite a lot of time trying to re-align the bits once on the model.  Not sure if this is common with FoW decals, or just because this is such an old box set.  I've painted the crosses on previous models and not put Regimental markings or Tank numbers on before.

This months entry is painted, just awaiting getting a pic if the light is good enough tomorrow.

I use a decal softener (basically melts the decal to the miniature and makes it look painted on) followed by brush painting a coat of matt varnish (Vallejo) and then spray matt varnishing the miniature once or twice.

For old decals people suggest varnishing them on the sheet (i've never tried it) to keep the decal together. I rather be able to use the softener so I can spend the time swearing :)

I suspect your ones are old too.

Thanks von Lucky - I'll have a look for some decal softener next time I'm in the FLGS.

I got the chance to get these painted over the last few days and know that there is no way I'm going to get the infantry stands done over Christmas so may as well put them up now....

I really like the look of those, nice work on the camo. The soldiers look lifelike.

Neat scene with the rows of vines too :)
