Sharp Practice 2 -Samurai???
« on: 08 August 2016, 06:23:41 PM »
I have decided to have a go at converting SP2 to use with samurai and Koreans, it's a period I have always loved and think that with a bit of work it could be done. I will put my thoughts up on here in a hope that I will get some feed back on what I propose...

Fantastic - will follow this as I would love to use the rules for this period. Many thanks for your efforts - looking forward to it.

Did I send you the SP 1 version I did?

Dunno if it would work for the new version as I haven't played it yet.

cheers

Yes you did send it, there are elements that are the same but troop capabilities are a little different in SP2. Think I could work well for sengoku era, especially with the use of the command cards, could help to give it the right flavour, I hope

First ideas

Elite.
Samurai and monks
Regulars.
Ashigaru
Ronin
Militia.
Ikko ikki
Peasants

Skirmishes
Archers and teppo

All cavalry are impact

Ashigaru can be armed with Yari, nagae Yari, teppo, bow

Bow- 1 dice, reload 0, fire at - 1, reload 1 with no penalty. Range 0-12 effective 12-24 long samurai count as 1 better cover, in open counts as light cover
Teppo 1 dice, reload 2, 0-12 close,12-24 effective, 24-36 long +1 at short range,

Fisticuffs

Missile troops count as fighting without bayonets -2d unless in formation with Yari/nagae Yari.

That will do to start

Wasn't there some talk of the Lardies coming out with an actual Samurai system of some kind?

There is in fact a Samurai adaptation of Dux Britanniarum (called Seven Spears) in the 2014 Summer Special

http://toofatlardies.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=15&products_id=152

Not SP or SP2, obviously, but perhaps useful. It includes a full campaign system with maps, modifying the Dux campaign system with appropriate local colour.

I do have the samurai adaption and it is very good, i just feel, and i might be wrong on this but SP2, especially with the command cards and characteristics, can help add more flavour to the period

quick idea,

For hand weapon troops, change crashing volley to crashing charge, with the same effects of double shock

abit of a change to the ratings

ELITE: Hatimoto
REGULARS: Samurai, Korean elites, Japanese monks
CONSCRIPTS/VOLUNTEERS: Ashigaru, Korean Heavy Infantry, Korean Monks
MILITIA: Korean garrison troops

CLAN, TRIBE for Korean guerrillas
WALLAHS: peasants

the ratings, e.g elite, regulars are just to show where they are in comparisson to each other, i will change the names at a later date

If it could be adaptes to the Boshin war, I would buy it straight away

There are Boshin war lists for SP2 at http://toofatlardies.co.uk/blog/?p=5955

They do have some detail for samurai and other traditional troops but at a rather lower level of granularity than I think is envisaged here.

I would certainly agree that the various possibilities for command cards & characteristics could make for a very interesting adaptation, but I don't know anything near enough about the period to suggest anything sensible.

I do have some Perry samurai, though, both painted and unpainted. Not sure I have space for another project right now, but then again when did that ever stop anyone...

Received my first batch of steel fist minis today, although I own some already, the sculpts still amaze me, now I haven't forgotten this idea, just waiting to get Newbury out of the way and then I can concentrate more on this and buying terrain and minis for it
