I want an abridged version of the rules.
« on: 13 August 2016, 06:12:37 PM »
I believe that Joe stated that a compilation of Frostgrave and the various supplements will be released in the future, but I'd really like to have an abridged version, minus the fluff and the pictures.  The current Frostgrave book is 137 pages (PDF version), but it could easily be condensed to far fewer pages.  I'd also like to see things like the spell charts, item charts, soldier options, etc., consolidated together so that we don't have to reference different books or sections.

As an example, the current rules to create a wizard, which includes school specific information, is ten pages.  that could easily be condensed to probably two pages, with only hard data being present.  Just have the wizard stat line, weapon options, the rules for spell selection, and a chart showing opposed schools, etc.

Then have all of the spells (arranged by school would be better, I think), including the supplement spells.

Have all of the soldiers in one location.

Have all of the basic combat rules, minus situational explanations, etc.

Have all of the item charts, monster generation charts, etc.

All of the rules, focusing on the hard data, could probably be condensed to about fifty pages.  This would be great, since it would be much easier to reference rules mid-game.  Obviously, this would be more of an optional supplement, but it would be great.

Oh, that kind of abridged.  I've clearly been watching too much Youtube anime lately.  "Abridged" has begun to mean "fan-produced parody" to me.

Not what you meant, but the idea of doing tongue-in-cheek Frostgrave is vaguely appealing.  Maybe something in a Monty Python vein?  Killer "snow bunny" wandering monster would about on theme.  "That rabbit's dynamite!"  Or revive the ancient SPI running gag about giant killer penguins.

The only compilation I recall Joe saying was one next year that will be a printed version of the current digital-only supplements. I don't recall him saying anything about an "all-in-one" book including the core rules.

This sounds like something that a player should be able to put together fairly easily himself. Maby a few hours work in Word or Power point. Sounds like a good idea I might do somthing just for myself :-)

I've started doing just that.  I almost got the core rules, minus the monster charts and entries, but am under 50 pages, and that is before editing the "fluff"  I then intend to incorporate the supplements, and will insert the various parts so that they are organized with the core rules.  The only problem is that it's not something I can share, for obvious reasons.

Not sure if it makes commercial sense to release something along these lines - new players will generally be drawn to a nicely illustrated book, while current players would be purchasing something they already have. Besides, after a few games it's mostly just the treasure tables that have to be looked up.

Additionally, the pictures can help find rules too - if I open the book on the picture of the summoner with the blue magical portal, I'd know I can find the rules for treasure on the next page over.
