Voodoo Pirates question
« on: August 18, 2016, 08:41:05 PM »
Hi,

my idea is to do a donnybrook cultist faction and I want them to be followers of a voodoo cult in the caribbean or in west africa.

So I don´t need zombies but "still alive" figures. I thought Foundry Pirates was a good idea, but am not sure how to make them voodoo like. Maybe paint white skulls on to their faces?

Any Ideas???

Brigade Games' "Caribbean Empires range" includes two packs of Haitian folklore zombies (ie not George Romero's rotting corpses) and one of Voodoo priests:

If you want to modify pirate figures, perhaps cutting off their heads and reattaching them at an unnatural, lolloping angle might work?
Back from the dead, almost.

If you're looking for living pirates following a zombie cult, the face paint idea might not be bad! That would be along the lines of Baron Samedi:

So the body paint is a definite possibility! You could have them led by the priests/priestesses that Steve F linked. You could also add snakes, bones, feathers and charms to the pirate minis. In the vein of Baron Samedi, top hats do help in giving a pop culture voodoo vibe. Shapeways has these 28mm top hats: http://www.shapeways.com/product/L3YCVYQ86/28mm-top-hats-x8

Also West Wind has these: http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/index.php?route=product/category&path=70_119 although I'm not sure about the quality.

The Priestess with the snake is a magnificent figure. I find West Wind quite good but some of their range is a bit awkward in pose.

very helpful ideas! I think I am going to paint some skulls on the faces and maybe get some voodoo priests from other ranges.

Thanks to all of you

You could also try the Cultists range from Freebooter Miniatures:

In my c.1700 pirate campaign in the Caribbean I tolerate (and sometimes I encourage) some voodoo magic; the priestesses with snakes are a nice addition, but I am unhappy with players who want to bring the miniature wearing a top hat – which certainly did not exist in 1700.

Um, yes, I know it can seem strange to be happy with magic but unhappy with top hats in an (almost) historical campaign... ::) lol

West Wind awesomeness:

The HorrorClix Voodoo Priest sculpt is really nice, just in the need of a proper paint job:

Funnily enough I've just done some myself. I was able to get a pile of Foundry pirates second-hand that included some of the maroons with muskets. The one in the straw hat happened to reminded me of the voodoo scenes in the Bond movie that I checked out.

I painted one with a white skeleton over his exposed flesh, others I've painted with part white faces – they look pretty cool and I may do some more.

I'm hoping that they do an 'Amazon' south American jungle version of Congo!

Old Glory have a pack of 30 Voodoo Warriors, see http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/proddetail.asp?prod=OGP-27

That's where the photo is, I'm told oldglory25s.com does postage at cost, not a blanket overpricing.

And here's a look at them painted for pretty much what you are looking at - http://flashman14.blogspot.com.au/2016/10/25mm-old-glory-voodoo-warriorrs.html
