My first Mid-East opfor vehicles
« on: September 06, 2016, 03:42:17 PM »
These are the first of what will be a 10-12 vehicle, generic middle-Eastern opfor.
The color scheme is primarily based on the Iraqi military of the Desert Storm era.
I will be adding (2) BMP1's, (2) T72's, (2-3) T-55's and maybe a few Toyota trucks with bed mounted weapons.
I had planned to add a couple of repainted, metal BTR-80's that were listed as 1/50 but came out more in the 1/58 range and just look odd next to the other vehicles.

The T-62 was found on eBay with a broken gun and mis-mounted tracks.
It came in a box from a company called Wartanks, but looks very similar to the one sold by Gasoline. It's a very heavy, hard resin.
I was able to break the tracks loose, repair the broken gun tube and then repainted it as close to the original color as I could get.

The BM-21 is listed as 1:43 and again, it and one other came from ebay. I disassembled it and gave it a  base coat of Krylon Kahki and then drybrushed it to match the T-62.

The ZSU-23 is from HLBS and is one of two that I have. The other has just received its basic green base coat and will be part of my cold war Soviet force.

Nice collection.
Really like the color you used.
Love the T-62.
Wish some one would come out with one  in 1/48-1/50 scale.
Plan to use the James Bond Goldeneye one, to cool not to.

Very cool...

I'm really hoping for a decent BMP-2 in 1/48 or 1/50 - The ones available right now are horribly off-scale.

Thanks guys.
The scheme is fairly simple,
Rust-oleum or Krlyon 'Kahki' spray paint as the base coat.
Dry-brushed with Americana SA077 'Desert sand' acrylic from Wal-mart/Hobby Lobby etc.
Followed by dry-brush coats of FolkArt 420 'Linen' and FolkArt 431 'French Vanilla'.
After inking the panel lines and raised details, I hit it with another dusting of the French Vanilla.
The Acrylics are only around $2 USD for a 2 oz. 59 ml. bottle at any local craft store and paint on very smooth when thinned with Future acrylic wax.
As for other vehicles:

I've got a couple of HLBS BMP-2's on the shelf that are meant to be painted up in Russian colors.
I haven't taken them out of the box, so I haven't done any scale measurements.
Are they way out of scale for 1/48-1/50?

The BM-21 is made by a company called Elcon.
There are several vendors in Russia, but I bought mine from a vendor located here in the states.
I bought two of them and also a Ural 6x6 transport truck.
The are very well made, but the plastic parts do not match the color of the body. A new paint job was a must for me.

As for the BMP's, I just measured my built HLBS BMP-1 and it is 140mm long from nose to tail.
Using the 6.74 M length I see listed for the 1:1 scale BMP on the web, that comes out to 1:48.14.

The un-built BMP-2 hull is also 140mm long and with a listed length of 6.72m for the 1:1 vehicle, that comes out to 1:48.00.
I just received all of these in the last month, so it's possible that the molds might have been re-tooled?
I also bought some BMD's and an SO-120.

I just checked the size on the BM-21.
Based on the specs for the Ural-4320 truck, it is spot on at 1:43.12 scale.
Since Urals are frigging huge, it doesn't look too out of place.
Especially since it will be used primarily as an objective at the far end of the table.

I did some measurements on the BMP-1 height and width.
The dimensions are as close as my old eyes and 3x workbench glasses will allow.  ;)

Anyhow, the height is 43mm to the top of the hatch and 46mm to the top of the periscope
Depending on your reference point vs. the 2.068M listed height of the BMP, it is 1:48.09 to the hatch or 1:44.95 to the periscope. YMMV.

Width is 66mm measured and scales out at 1:44.54.
So, it is a definitely a bit wider than it should be, but not outlandishly so. I own three, so I'm going to roll with it.
