Cobblestones
« on: September 15, 2016, 11:04:11 PM »
I am sure, this has come up before - but what do you gents use for cobblestone pavings on your Victorian tables?

I have given up on finding some appropriately textured wallpaper her in this godforsaken wargaming outback, so is there some equally easy way to cover an entire table/board for placing buildings on top (would prefer that approach)?

Maybe a gaming mat? Anything, really?

I know of textured plasticard, but that is best used for actual road sections, I believe, and I would like to cover an entire board as seamless as possible.
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Deepcut Studio has some copplestone mats:

These are the largest sizes, but you can get smaller ones as well

Looks like a solution, thanks!

Might consider one or more of those.

Well depending on the size, you could use some kind of glue and lentils for a very nice effect. This of course is not practical for a large area.... As far as glue goes look for the kind that scrapbookers use as it is more of a paste and it dries very clear and solid

As you mention, not practical for an entire table - doable for road sections, though.

Other cobblestone mats:

F.A.T. Mat: Urban Combat 4'x4' (The 6'x4' version is NOT cobblestone)
I have this one and really like it.

Game Matz Cobblestone Streets
Pay the extra money and get their Pro Matz (mousepad mats). I got some of their vinyl mats in their first Kickstarter: they are fairly shiny and have an embossed grid-like texture impressed into the vinyl. Nice graphics, but the other aspects of the vinyl mats ruin them for me.

To the best of my knowledge, Kraken Mats are only available at FantasyWelt, and are only available to be shipped within Europe. If anyone knows if we can get them here in the States, please let me know!  :D

I use the  vinyl cobblestone matts that are sold around christmas time for the display of ceramic christmas houses. They are not quite accurate (usually the stones are too big) but are nicely textured and will take paint pretty well.
You can see them in use here:

The ones I buy are from LEMAX, but I'm not sure if/how they are sold over there.

For the streets in my 28mm Victorian city I used JTT plastic O scale random course stone.  The same pattern is also made by Plastruct but it is significantly more expensive.  You can see my cobblestone streets at www.warin15mm.com/Victorian-Gallery.html

Really made for 54mm or larger figures, but...

The largest are a yard by half a yard, so large enough to do a village square or market, with smaller 'strips' available for making roads and paths. This goes part way to the OP's request, though less than a 'whole table'.

Near and dear to my heart, often dirt cheap on after-holiday sales.

Mind, War's look smashing!

May I ask, are the buildings scratch-built or are they plastic kits of some sorts? I haven't come across such nice masonry other than here on the forum.

Note: Don't just start putting cobblestone sheeting on everything just because you have lots extra left over.  Use it only for street pavement.

But you want to break up the cobblestone sea with something else stone-like, you can always add flagstones to the floors of some of the terrain pieces that you make for your board:

http://warzone40k.com/flagstone-guide

Use the flagstones sparingly, where really called for, or it will look like the two stone types are competing against each other unnecessarily and will also change the geographic flavor.

I have used that same flagstone idea successfully but with pieces cut out of egg crate cardboard.  I wish I had taken pictures of those past projects before I sold them off to fellow gamers.

PS.  For my cobblestone street pavement surfaces I have used thick "basketball" textured paper, similar to these examples here.  It's extremely easy to cut to shape, to glue down and to paint/seal:

Argonor, the only buildings in my Victorian city that are completely scratch built are the Whitechapel row houses and pub.  They were built around an inner framework of Duplos with Evergreen and JTT plastic glued over them.  Their windows and doors were also scratch built from Evergreen plastic.  The rest of the buildings are a combination of 0 gauge buildings (mostly RailKing) and Old Glory 25s' Chicago Gangster buildings and their Old West Empire buildings.  To get real detail on all of this look at paragraph 4 of the write up I did for this gallery... just to the right of the pictures.
