Gun + cart = gun cart
« on: 26 September 2016, 03:44:20 PM »
I came across a lovely picture of a gun mounted on a garrison carriage being hauled across Texas on the back of an ox cart.

I thought this would make a lovely model that would be a fun objective for a forthcoming game so decided to convert one of my Boot Hill Miniatures peasant carts to do the job.

Here is the amended cart, I only wanted it to be pulled by one ox, so added two shafts and removed the rear rails section. A little greenstuff later and this is the result:

Here is the gun and some barrels painted earlier today:

The gun in situ on the cart:

Carrying the barrels instead:

This should prove useful not only in my Tex/Mex games, but in F&IW, smuggling, pirates etc.

A very tidy cart, useful in quite a few periods as you point out.

Van Nuys.

FYI, you can get a 1/48 scale one-ox carreta, in plastic, from one of the Pegasus Mission Indians boxes.

Question: What was the story on the cannon? Being transported from where to where, for what purpose? I might like to make a scenario out of that, sometime. I thought Spanish Texas comprised San Antonio, Mission San Saba, and not much else.
You'll shoot your eye out, kid!

The gun was a 12pdr Carronade transported via ox cart by the Texians to San Antonio de Bejar when they were laying seige to the town in Dec 1835. They had no seige guns and the carronade was useless as it was designed to scatter shot across a ships deck, not blow holes  in buildings. It was later used by the Texians in defence of the Alamo in Feb- Mar 1836.

Where it came from I don't know. The author suggested it originally came from a ship which would probably have been moored somewhere along the Texas coast.
