Thanks, folks.

Argonor, you cheeky monkey, the base colour is GW Bestial Brown, but messed about with various washes and drybrushed highlights. Oddly, the camera has disagreed with it. With the naked eye it looks much less dark, and not so red. Not sure why that is.

Bestial Brown has a tendency to look reddish/pinkish in photos taken in artificial light - especially with a digital camera. I don't know why, it's just one of those things...  ::)

I actually like the way it looks in the pic - I think I've seen reddish/orangey termite mounds in several movies.

The long grass is Woodland Scenics field grass from Noch (I also have 'harvest gold' colour which is a kind of sun-burnt shade, but I wanted some green to contrast with the red-brown earth). The little tufts are MiniNatur tufts.

Got both of these from Antenociti's Workshop, but you may well be able to locate some a bit closer to home.

Very nicely done. Polyfilla is just our regular drywall spackling here in the US, isn't it?

One miniature is too many, and a thousand are not enough...

Not sure, not too familiar with the word spackling, here the stuff is just called Polyfilla, the way people call vacuum cleaners 'Hoovers.' It's for filling up cracks and holes in walls, that kind of thing.

I use the quick drying ready-mixed sort. You just squeeze it out of a tube like toothpaste and it dries in minutes. It's messy (or maybe it's me that's messy), so I don't tend to use it for figure bases. But it's good for terrain pieces and such.

Yep, that's spackling: drywall filler. Makes a nice rough surface when dried.
  Very nice work.

Quite nice, it's not bad :). Wouldn't want to be that close to mounds like that if I were them.

I know this is about the mounds and not the grass, but what did you use for it? I've been trying to figure out what's best to use for long grass like that.

I already answered that one. Do pay attention, Double-Oh-Seven.  :)

Woodland Scenics Field Grass. It's about three quarters of the way down this page:

You expect the only one to get Azathoth on the Mythos Monsters quiz to catch everything which way and that with such a mental capacity and appalling eye-sight? ;D. Thanks for the link very much so though!

I'm going to try my hand at these. I've got some Quar in dire need of terrain pieces, and this will fit perfectly with the scenario.

And of course, you can let your imagination run riot if you are doing it for sci-fi. Who knows how big Quar termites can get, and what weird shapes the critters build?
