54mm Diorama *COMPLETE*
« on: October 13, 2016, 06:47:02 PM »
Hi everyone! I've been working on this project since a little while, and it's now time to share what i've done so far.
I'm working with a pro-painter to build a diorama together. Needless to say, i'll do the sculpting.
Since he had a few figures waiting to be painted, we discussed about the diorama shape. I wanted to do something challenging, and we agreed for a 2-level diorama: Below, a sewer-catacomb futuristic tunnel while on the top a rural scene.

After a few tries, we decided for a diagonal setup, with this rough shape:

Tracing from this volumes, i did a first concept drawing:

The "Real" model is made using a temporary mold, to recreate the concrete form technique. It took a bit of geometry and ruler work to make it right, but the result was quite similar to the original concept.

Now, i'm starting the detailing work. The lower level is almost done, what's missing now is the ladder and a few minor fixes. A lot stil to do above, though.

C&C really welcome!

Cheers,
Jack

That is an amazing piece of work. Can't wait to see how it paints up and what figures it will hold.

Nice concept, well executed. The small pipes and details really make it work.

Yes, the detailing is exceptional. Looks already very naturalistic. I am sitting on the edge of my chair and look forward to see the final piece.

Some progresses on the ladder and all the finishing touches on the ground:

Now it's DEFINITELY time to work on the upper level!

Suggestions are welcome, i'm still not 100% sure on what to do up there!

Thanks jim! The diorama will have 2 figures on the upper part as well, yes. That's was the request of the client.
I've got pictures of the figures but i'm afraid i can't share them for now, since they are unreleased products. :S

Would normal tarmac do then, like it's in a car park or warehouse area?

We were thinking at a rural postapoc scenario: possibly 1-2 cm of rubble and ground with an unexploded bomb coming out, then grass and a simple and old brick wall.
Just to give more contrast, you know.

Woweee geez, nice work.

That's a fairly solid lump of plaster there. Did you add any hollowing elements to save weight? Or, alternatively, did you add any wires to the plaster for strength?

Thanks lads!

In my experience if dried properly that kind of thickness of plaster is rather unbreakable. I've added some hollowing elements in the thickest bulk, but it's  a minor part of the volume. As it is, it's nearly 900 grams of plaster. :)

Soon with new updates! :)
