28mm Legion of the 9th Shield Transfers ?
« on: 27 October 2016, 08:53:50 PM »
Hi, I'm looking to make a rag-tag group of survivors of the Roman 1X Legion using Warlord Games plastic Veteran sprue (with an idea of using them in a Broken Legions game) but am having difficulty tracking down any 1X shield transfers.
Does anyone know if these are produced by any manufacturer please ? A Google search is not throwing up any results for me.

Regards

There's no evidence that Roman legions used specific or even uniformed shield designs. If they did, we've no clue about actual attribution. So you're free to use any transfers (of suitable size) you fancy. :)

Had a look in Dando-Collins' "Legions of Rome".  He notes 9th Hispana's emblem was the Bull and its 'birth' sign Capricorn (probably).

Not sure how this helps but see how you go.

I think Little Big Man makes some Caesarian transfers with goats but designed for an oval scutum.  Maybe paint the Centurion's shield or standard bearer's shields with a goat (s) or bull?

Just a caveat there: The bull badge is an educated guess based on the idea that (some? all?) legions founded/deployed by Julius Caesar received such an emblem. You could use this, but you don't have to in order to depict the Ninth.
No idea where the information on a 'birth sign' comes from (the 9th legion's origin is as obscure as its disappearance), but maybe another neat idea for decoration. Neither more nor less likely than any other motif, I'd say.

Edit: If anyone's interested, there's a fairly up-to-date article on the Ninth on Livius.org.

I would look at Little Big Man studio's shield transfers , they have more variety for warlord's Romans, I never used the veteran's shields as they just look too battered to be used in a battle.

I hope you did that with handful of salt. Dando Collins is one of only two authors whose books I've actually thrown in the bin to stop other people reading the nonsense.

Thanks Mr Ed.  Always take a critical view of writers and their histories but would never throw a book in the bin!

Nor would I under any normal circumstances, but this one deserved it.

In fact one of the LBMS Warlord transfers is meant to represent the 9th Legion.

http://www.littlebigmenstudios.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2461

The text in the small boxes either side of the boss reads LEGIX HISP.

Whilst it is absolutely right to say that this or pretty much any other specific design is almost entirely speculative, it's a plausible and fairly attractive design. And since as an old Rosemary Sutcliff fan I had to have at least one subunit of the 9th in any EIR army I own, of course I have some of them...
