Who has a 28 mm army (modern) ?
« on: 08 November 2016, 02:58:38 PM »
My question is:

Any of you have a number of "soldiers" , modern , 28mm that can be considered an army.

We tal about platoon, squads. But i´m talking about a 28mm army.

Who has it? Please don´t complicate to much :).

I doubt too many folks do.   28mm Moderns in the quantity needed to be an 'army', well, there are not too many rule sets where you would need that.   Army actions imply a lot of combined arms and smaller scales would greatly facilitate the space/distance and figure quantities needed to play out such actions.   Add in many modern actions at the tactical level tend to be affairs where squads to companies (with some support) make contact with similar or smaller sized units from their adversary.   Large unit actions, again, would require tons of vehicles and support assets that 28mm just doesn't seem to fit.

The most I have had for a specific force in 28mm were 2 platoons of African warlord troops, along with a few assorted support elements...

Now, in 20mm, I have a Soviet Tank Company, Motor Rifle Company and assorted odd's and sods of assets....

I would imagine that anyone who plays AK47 Republic in 28mm, rather than 15mm (and I'm sure someone out there does), then they technically have an 'army', as much as a force of around brigade-size might be termed one.

Following on from Captain Jake's comments, most 28mm games are platoon-based, or in more recent terms sub-platoon based. War itself, with a few exceptions, is now mostly fought at platoon-level or below. Only when you get the occasional big war (Gulf 1 and 2, Arab-Israeli Wars etc) do you tend to find the 'company' (or more correctly mixed battle groups or task forces of company size) as a battlefield entity, rather than an administrative one.

I don't think you can play at anything bigger than 1:285 for a full army, and even that would be a challenge. Table scale alone would restrict the effort.

I have about 100 Devil Dog Somali militia with some TAG thrown in, about 60 TAG USMC, 80 Eureka Rhodesians, 100 TAG Soviets/Russians, 80 French, a fistful of Mongrel Brits (wish I could get more!).
About 25 vehicles of various makes and models.

Not sure if that constitutes an "army."

Just curious, could the some of the TAG Russians pass as late 80's Soviets? I was thinking about picking some of those up.

What size would you accept to be an army?
An "army" - or would a battalion (800 men) or even a company be sufficient?

I think that rather many modern gamers own platoon equivalents and even some have company sized forces, but I doubt that there a many who have "armies" larger than that, because this is what 6mm or smaller is made for.

Von Greg:

I'm not an expert but I think the TAG Russians would do great as 1980's. They tend towards bulky. I plan on using them as everything from 1980's to Chechnya to current.

Thanks Chuckaroobob. I was trying to match up equipment/uniforms and most looked like it would work pre-fall as well.

Depends on how anal you are. The TAG Russians are wearing kit that wasn't really introduced until the early 1990s, namely the 6B5 body armour with it's distinctive waist pouches.  Supposedly, it was introduced in the late eighties but there's really not much photographic evidence before the First Chechen Wars and that's what those TAG figures are designed to portray, Russians in the 1990s and early 2000s.

If you want late 1980s Soviets you are better off looking at the Eureka range. Those are designed for mid/late eighties Afghanistan. Mike Bravo is promising a complementary range sometime early next year.

Ok, I'm fascinated.

You seem really keen on getting an answer on this and I'm curious to know "why"? Do you have some particular thoughts on this issue and 28mm modern wargaming in general? Could be a really interesting discussion rather than a "fight". Interesting discussion is what I joined this forum for. Happy to contribute to this topic but interested in knowing where you are coming from first.

Why don't you start by telling us how many 28mm modern figures you have?
