Hi Steve,

I replied on the forum but alas it has gone down again. :-(

I've deliberately over-represented the triarii as the legion becomes too weak if they straddle two boxes.  Also, a continuous line of triarii looks much better than a gappy line.

I don't believe later Roman armies had a line relief mechanism equivalent to the Polybian one- subsequent lines were fed into the battle but we don't know what happened to the first line; they don't appear to have been pulled back into a reserve that was capable of playing a part, again, later in the battle. There certainly wasn't anything like the "quincunx".

BTW I tightened up the wording of the line exchange yesterday, it is in a revised "rise of Rome" booklet.

Hi James!

Best, Simon

My Principes and Hastati are in units of 24, my Triarii are in units of 12s

Unit wise they are over strong, though small units are pretty weak anyway but, having them in every box makes them play right. In our game they had to turn to face the rear on more than one occasion (because of Carthaginian cavalry and Mago) and it wouldn't have played right if there had been undefended gaps in their line. It isn't exactly right, but it does work as it is, and if you fudge the small unit by simply using less numbers (as I do) it also looks right.

Yes that's how I have mine too, James.

In our recent Magnesia game the triarii performed astonishing feats- seeing off cataphracts and all comers.  The +1 save for long spear vs cavalry helped!
