how to make tents
« on: 15 February 2009, 04:41:09 PM »
I have been making some tents for my old west games. I have made a frame from card for a large and medium tent. What do you recommend for the tent "fabric"?

Are there any tent tutorials anywhere?

I use tissue soaked in a 1:1 mix of PVA glue and water.  It's not as flimsy as it sounds - once it dries it is rock hard and will support the weight of metal figures.

I purchased some of the Arnica Montana tents as I could never get my home-made ones to look right. Hawgleg Publishing purchased the line and here is the link.

I highly recommend these tents as they are perfect in size. Only drawback is that they are solid and not hollow. I can live with that!!

I use Kleenex or a heavy cotton double ply TP.

I tried some of the tissue paper.. I failed miserably!  :'(

I decided to just use normal printer paper and it's come out a little better! I'll post some pics once i paint the stuff up

Try using a soft metal like toothpaste tubes or tomato paste... modelers use this for flags so it should work well to simulate cloth tents as well...

I remember a tutorial on tents. The writer used strawberry baskets and paper kitchen towels. Covered the towels in watered glue. If I can find it I will post a link.

I used a card former clad with kitchen roll which i "delaminated" to "1 ply". The trick I found was to hold the kitchen roll against the apex of the tent and drop on very watered down PVA from the apex to the base. Seemed to work okay.
If I was doing it again I'd mix in a little khaki paint into the PVA to give a better base colour to work from.

Hope that helps
