I just finished up an in-depth review of Death Ray Designs Base Inserts/Toppers including beneifts and drawbacks of the different avaialble materials, and some hints for choosing the right size.

Pretty cool product, especially if you're a cheapskate wargamer like me.

Thanks!
I was unaware of card inserts til now, but I guess they've been around for at least a couple years.

Awesome sauce!  8)

Colour me interested. I've been using Champ bases for years too, and those tech toppers would allow for some interesting variation.

And I'm not phased by 'only' six designs: those Champs only come in four...  :D

As it happens I emailed DRD about my blog post to give them the opportunity to have any of their comments added to the post. (I don't change my portion of the content for reviews).  They responded generally positively and I actually heard back specifically about the limited designs in the steel plate pack.  Apparently it was an early pack and hasn't generated enough sales to prioritize an upgrade.  To be fair to them it does look like most of their other packs have more variation.

When I get around to using them I'm thinking cutting sections of the steel plate pack away and putting circular drywall mesh tape in the voids to add a bit of variation.

I've just finised basing up the entirely of the Mouse and Mystics core game box on the wood and flagstone sets. I'll blog pics and my final thoughts on the bases when they're painted.
