Weird West books
« on: 21 December 2016, 03:02:49 AM »
Howdy! I was hoping I might raise the subject of Weird West themed books and other media since it seems to have been gaining popularity on ebooks as of late. As far as I'm concerned, that's nothing but a good thing, as Western stuff works with almost anything. More cowboys and zombies than you can shake a stick at though! For now I'll just bring up the exceptionally well written books that I personally have read but I'm more than happy to hear about others!

I think this is the very first instance of Weird West, Robert E. Howard's tale The Horror from the Mound. http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0601761h.html
It's a darned fun read!

More recently I came across this tale, Red River Rangers. It is definitely far above average for a Kindle indie published book and I highly recommend it! https://www.amazon.com/Red-River-Rangers-Jessica-West-ebook/dp/B00MR7KNMY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482288730&sr=8-1&keywords=red+river+rangers

How the West Went to Hell is a lot darker if you're into that sort of thing. It's a good anthology collection with some really fun off the wall ideas, although I do not recommend it if you are squeamish. Also this author has written more Bigfoot and Sasquatch stories than the Syfy channel, which I have to admit is an incredible feat. https://www.amazon.com/How-West-Went-Hell-Collected/dp/149549179X/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1482288845&sr=1-2&keywords=how+the+west+went+to+hell

Coyote: The Outlander is a really fun and imaginitive hybrid of Weird West, Steampunk and inter-dimensional shenanigans. I confess, I'm a bit biased towards anything dealing with things from other dimensions, but I think it's actually very well written. One scene genuinely seemed to jump out at me and kept me hanging on every word. This writer has some powerful skills! I'm in the middle of reading its follow up story, which looks like it will turn into a series, and I'm really enjoying it. I hope more of this comes out! https://www.amazon.com/Coyote-Outlander-second-screen-experience-ebook/dp/B00E392ZBQ/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8

What do you guys think? Anyone else interested in reading this sort of stuff or run any fun games that are Weird West themed?

As a big fan of "Shadows of Brimstone" I'm very interested in the Weird West. So, yes, I am interested in learning about what fiction is out there, as well as what's worth reading and what's worth avoiding.

Try,

West of Hell, Jason Brant. This is an omnibus of three books.
Devil Wind and its sequel, by William Nikkel.

Also, a year or so ago someone wrote a novel set in the Deadlands universe but can't remember the name.

Just started playing Shadows of Brimstone recently, and really enjoying it.  So I will keep my eye on your thread, Eccentric Cowboy, and maybe try some of these works.

Hmmm Just typed in "Weird West" in Amazon's search engine and there are a ton of hits, including some works by fairly "big name" writers like David Brin and Mike Resnick.  Apparently it is a genre that has arrived!

After doing a little more noodling on teh internets, I have discovered that the David Brin writing some weird west tales is not the same David Brin of the Uplift series, etc.

A few I've gotten on a whim & enjoyed quite a bit in no particular order:

-The guns of Santa Sangre by Eric Red
-Grinders Keeper by Eric Bahle
-Skull Moon & Skin Medecine by Tim Curran
-The Hawthorne series by Heath Lowrance

I'm always looking for a good western horror yarn.
I am looking for the following Deadlands minis:  Shotgun Thug, Lost Soul, Cleaners, Railroad Workers & Feral Dead. If you have any of these minis, or if you are one, please send me a PM.

Man, this genre is growing even faster than I thought! I actually haven't heard of any of these other titles. And I considered myself a expert on Weird West! XD
I'm not disappointed though. I'm positively ecstatic to learn that it's growing so fast. I hope there are some real gems floating around out there.

The second book in the Gideon Smith VSF tales series "Gideon Smith and the Brass Dragon" is set in the Weird West:

It has Indians, Cowboys, a steampunk bandit town, US army, airships, samurai, automatons and dinosaurs. Though you might want to read the first book, which is set in the UK and Egypt and sets up the second one.

Felix Gilman's The Half-Made World and its kind-of-sequel The Rise of Ransom City are sorta applicable (a blurb for them is "a fantastical reimagining of the American West which draws its influence from steampunk, the American western tradition, and magical realism"), even tho they are set in a fantasy world instead of a place that's supposed to be our Earth.
