Beginnings Of A Frontier Settlement
« on: December 21, 2016, 08:08:18 AM »
I've been working on a settlement for a more frontier feeling setting with an empire spreading into a new frontier. So, the cabins that Hobby Lobby has for $3.99 fit the concept well with some adjustments.

I have two buildings ready to go and a few more that have work on them put on hold until after Christmas when the house clears out somewhat.

But here they are, the cabin and an outhouse...

Lovely work. Especially like the wood colouring!
The wood was a rather simple mix of things.

Primed it flat black brush on (due to the chimney and a few bits on the ground to keep the base from being a bit to flat), then FolkArt Coffee Brown for a base coat, then 1/2 Coffee Brown/1/2 folk art terra cotta for a heavy drybrush (Trying to keep the redwoods type theme that I used with the trees I'm using with the set), then a few washes (a black wash and a brown one that I've had mixed up for a while), then a light drybrush of Folkart driftwood, and a final wash of the P3 flesh wash.

The end tips had an extra layer of FolkArt Parchment before the washes to lighten them slightly.

The doors and windows got an extra layer of 1/4 Coffee Brown and 3/4 Terra Cotta at the same time as the end tips got their extra to make them a bit more distinct.

The woodpile got a bit heavier brush of driftwood to them, same with the handle and reinforcements for the outhouse door and the doorsteps..

The barrels were simply hit with a cherry stain followed by a bit of a brown wash that I worked from the bottom up and then inside the rim at the top after I painted the bands (Bands on the barrels and door along with the cabin door handle are Army Painter Armor (From one of the old Kings of War paint sets).

I'm still kind of annoyed that the plastic palm tree tops I've cut up and repurposed for ferns always look glossy in pictures of them, they don't look it out of them...

Started work on another building using the same kit. Was going to have a full thing of the parts of it, but, unfortunately, those pics didn't transfer...the entire set of pics there corrupted. But as I just have the basic building structure done, I took a few pics of that for anyone wondering about it.

However, this one is intended to be a smokehouse for my settlement, so it's not going to have windows or a chimney (Either one like the cabin that I created from foam, or the simple one that came with the kit (It's the wood block being used to raise the closer edges of the cabin up to help with pics).

Unfinished Cabin Structure

I also found a close to scale bull skull charm online. The Price was great (Five for a quarter with free shipping), and all I really need to do before painting/mounting it is to potentially clip the hooks/hoops on the back and even that isn't something I'm sure is necessary for all of them.

Got a bit of work done, both on the Smokehouse and in making a Totem Shrine that I can work with it or separately.

Smokehouse

I'm going to have a deck out from the door that goes to some stairs down, and I'm working on a woodpile with a cover structure...the covered woodpile needing to be done before I finish the roofing as I want to do it at the same time.

Totem Shrine

I've got a few areas where I'm planning on having lined with stone for a dirt walking area along with the areas that would be flocked up...the bull skull is the same as the one I'm going to put on the smokehouse (Painting it separate due to the issues with painting the wood behind it and the interior parts of the skull that would at least need black bombed).

Got more done on the Smokehouse. Finished the deck, constructed the woodpile with its cover, and decided to add a door for the furnace.

I still need to finish the roofing, and the woodpile cover isn't attached to the rest of it currently due to roofing concerns that would be a pain to attach right thanks to the overhang from the main smokehouse roof.

It all looks good so far, especially that smokehouse.

Could you share a link to the skull ornaments? That sort of bit is always interesting to have around!

For the charm, the price has gone up a little bit since I'd gotten mine, but HERE.

Charms seem to be a very good option for finding things to fit into stuff. The deer skull was one I found at hobby lobby.

Thanks, I keep trying to work out details of various ideas to fit the theming I've got.

A root cellar would be one that should work, if I can figure out how to not make it look like a hobbit hole...

Well, finished both the smokehouse and the shrine.

The two things I ran across as issues were with the bull skull. The first being that the horns are a bit to smooth and the shape made it impossible to add a texture to them to fix that since the basic shape of them makes that very hard (The buck skull is similar, but the shape of the antlers works well enough there). The other is that the back of the skull abruptly ends (so that it can lay flat against things)...but other than the shrine, I think most of them will be flat up against something.

I've begun work on two more buildings for the settlement, namely a barn and a watch tower. I'm also considering using some of the parts I can't use for them to build the visible part of a root cellar type building. These ones are a lot bigger than the first two, taking five kits to assemble to the size that I like for it.

The Barn

While it doesn't look like much now, I've got to work on the entire roof since the longer pieces were normally the length pieces, so I need to work out positions for them. It might take a while to get the roof for this one and the one for the other done...

The Watch Tower

I'm thinking of using pieces to put up against the interior of the base section of the tower to black it out where the gaps are slightly different (The smaller dowel pieces intended for the bottom of it don't have the notches, but it works well enough with a piece on the inside). I've also got a piece to use as a platform for the upper section, it just needs to be trimmed down a little bit to fit in place right.

I'm also thinking of making the roof of this one pyramidal rather than the same as the others...

Well, due to having a few less of the bases I was planning on using for the buildings than I'd thought I had, the barn and tower are semi-on hold until I can pick them up (Going near hobby lobby friday anyway), so I started working on something else for the settlement...building a well.

I'm using aquarium gravel and tacky glue to build up the main part...then I'll start the upper portion of it once that's done. Using a smaller base piece that, I believe is 2 1/2 inches diameter, and I marked a ring around a normal 1 inch base close to the center of it and just started with a ring of tacky glue around the outside of the marked ring that started the assembly. Probably going to work in some white glue and wipe off the outer edges before adding bits of sand to it. At the moment, it's enough of a pain to work in stones without needing to add sand as well during the construction.

However, it does look a lot better than an earlier attempt at a well I'd tried to make with foam a couple years back (Which is for a more japanese style terrain set anyway, but never finished it then)...
