Pulp Alley for ancient adventures??
« on: 04 January 2017, 08:44:28 PM »
I was wondering if Pulp Alley can be used for ancient adventures such as a party of Romans investigating a mysterious druid grove/temple?  I've heard the rules were flexible, but are they suitable for such old themes?

Absolutely! We've played Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians and it worked great.  :D

Pulp Alley really focuses on the ideas of adventure, discovery, and storytelling. And that stuff pretty much stays the same regardless of time period.

You might consider using one or more Setting Rules to encourage players to stick to the theme. In our Pulp Leagues book we have some different Settings that are worth checking out, such as Primitive, Single-shot, and so on. Also, I think the specific Weapon Kits are handy for ancients.

Let us know if you have questions.

I think Pulp Alley would be a great choice.  As Wolf Girl points out, the focus in PA is on storytelling, characters, and adventure.  It is not a weapons-focused wargame, but a flexible adventure/skirmish system that works fine in pretty much any era or genre.  In PA, a character's skill is more important than what kind of weapon he is using, so it works equally well with any technology level.  There's plenty of fighting, but also lots of noncombat perils and challenges you can work into your story scenario.  If you already have an idea for a scenario or campaign, Pulp Alley will let you get it on the table and have a lot of fun doing it.  Also, check out the new Horror Deck supplement to add some extra thrills and chills to your scenarios.

Another vote for definitely! I've just started playing Pulp Alley in a Wars of the Roses setting and it works very well. http://preacherbyday.blogspot.com/2017/01/pulp-alley-gets-medieval-on-your-ss.html
So no reason it wouldn't work for ancients too.
