As I said in the title, I GOT an idea  ;)

It's going to be a tricky construct and I've no idea if my GS skills will make the grade.

The construct will be tricky because the dragon will be in flight and it's centre of gravity will be all over the place (well it won't, it'll be at its centre of gravity, but you know what I mean  :D). My board isn't flat and I want the weighted part of the flight base to be as small as possible which means it needs to be light while the danger of it toppling calls for strength. I'm wondering about making the basic shape from copper wire, perhaps twisted around some foam shims, which are then smeared with milliput. We shall see.

Thanks Andy  :D

Apparently some sculpters use a pen without the byro part to make an impression of  scales in green stuff.

That's a really useful tip. Much appreciated.

One of the challenges will be getting the aesthetics of flight right. As well as considering the pose and weight of the model, I'm also pondering the structure of the flight stand. I want to be able to vary the angle of flight while keeping any aerial support as far out of sight as possible.

This type of stand (a forward cantilever?) seems like it might work:

The base will be weighted lead to reduce the footprint while I'm considering bending extruded acrylic rod to make the aerial support. I'm thinking as thin as possible, though the model weight will be key, and the thinnest clear rod I can find is 2mm dia (but thus far only available in 2m lengths!  :o). I'm thinking that if the rod comes out of the model at its lower rear (where one might imagine a dragon's genitalia to be) and sweeps backwards broadly in line with the tail and drops broadly in line with the legs, then for a lot of photo angles it should be out of sight or partially obscured. We shall see.  :D

Again Andy, thanks. It looks like the biro technique could work for the style of scale:

cheers

I've worked through a lot of options this morning .... weighted booms, cantilevers, electro-magnets, suspension lines.... I even momentarily pondered a mini drone  lol

As an aside, the only flying* dragons that I can find on retail are by Wizards of the Coast for their DND game. Such as:

http://wizkids.com/dd-icons-of-the-realms/

However, the GW LotR Winged Nazgul beast is in flight and is dragon-like:

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Winged-Nazgûl

I haven't seen either of them in the flesh and have no idea on sizing.

*flying, as in no part of anatomy in contact with ground/base

I'm really looking forward to this!!

As GOT is one of my main projects in gaming I've doubt about making a dragon for this years BSC as well, but the thinking about the flight base made me decide not to try it... you're definitely more brave and so I wish you all the best!  lol :)

Your green stuff skills are bloody good mate, should be a great build.

Thanks for the votes of confidence  :D

Hopefully my next post will be less pontification and more actual construction  ;)

This was similar to something I considered but decided against.
I shall certainly enjoy watching your endevours, though.

Or bend a bit of hollow brass rod so that the 'hole' is a 'scale' shape and use that, working from the bottom up shaping and tidying each row as you go.....
 ;)
