Expeditions to Varius Valley: Further Pulp Lunacy
« on: February 23, 2009, 04:14:44 AM »
The exlied Germans of the Luftwulfen had recieved a message: there was unobtainium and strange goings-on in the distant Varius Valley! (a deeply obscure location somewhere warm, tropical & lost) Pity their codes had been broken by several other groups - and that the Valley had both residents and a mad cult's Top Secret Project already there!

The Luftwulfen sent a squad of their crack LuftwulfenSturmenTroopen.

Seska, Spymistress of the Luftwulfen XX, also sent a group of her cunning spies under seperate cover.

An unsavoury group of unemployed American seamen heard rumours and slunk off into the interior to track them down.

The incredibly mysterious organization known only as ORB hired a group of heavily armed mercenaries and provided a map to the Varius Valley.

The mysterious cult sweated over Something Incredible in their makeshift camp on one side of the Valley.

The local lost tribe of Neanderthals, angered at the lack of game since the red-robed cultists moved in, plotted to summon and control the most ancient, dangerous denizens of the Valley to oust all these intruders.

Will the Luftwulfen's hired spies forget who they work for and betray the LuftwulfenSturmenTroopen to the highest bidder? Will the Cultists complete their secret project? Who will seize the unobtainium? Do the Neanderthals really have a fantastic stash of gems beneath their forbidding reptilian idol? Why exactly does the reptilian idol have such very, very big teeth?

What caused that thunderous roar to echo through the trackless jungle?

Was that a flash of red robe behind that tree?

There will be more pictures coming soon. I took a bunch but with wirelizard's camera. At the outset:

To set the scene: Mad scientist, his walker and his red-cloaked minions can be seen in the far left near the hut and the tall grass. On the right in the rear is the tribe of Tu-Rok, whose people have been inhabiting this area for time uncounted. Middle ground is the crashed plane on the hill, filled with Unobtainium, needed to power the walker. In the foreground, starting at each of the trail exits could be found the Zepplintroopen of the XX, the American mercenaries, a bunch of unemployed sailors and finally the spy cadre of the XX.

The sailors make a deal with the spies:

Tu-rok, unsatisfied with the amount of loot paid by these crazy red-cloaked folk decides to teach them a little lesson. Too bad their giant walker and its very scary noises is there to make him and his tribe turn tail.

Cultists, seeking the Unobtainium, come across the Zepplinetroopen. A battle ensues. Nobody notices the mercenares sneaking alongside. Much blood is shed all round. All looks hopeless for the cultists until one of the mercenaries notices that the cultist running past him seems to be carrying a BAR rifle. Being an ex-WWI serviceman himself, he quickly deduces that this brand new weapon means that these are actually US soldiers. A deal is made. Seems what we have actually stumbled across is a secret US Army research project. Too bad the spies turn the lead scientist into hamburger with a bomb dropped in the cockpit of the walker.

Things with teeth can also been seen. This is one of them:

After noticing a skulking spy, this particular specimen of reptile-dom is distracted by the sacrifice of Clive, a half-neanderthal who has acquired the taste for hair gel. Too bad so has the local wildlife. After it consumes the tasty hair gel, its tiny brain finally notices the sailors advancing towards the shrine. It decides to have a snack.

We never really did have an end to this. It was a minor victory for the cultists, because although they failed to get the walker off the table and to safety, they only revealed that they were US Army to the mercenaries and kept the XX from learning the truth. The Zepplintroopen also score a victory, for capturing the unobtainium, although how for how long it isn't certain. And the spies have disabled the walker, allowing them to take it away to be studied. Too bad the only person who knows how to build or operate them will need to be sponged out of the cockpit.

I will note that the colour balance is off on these photos. A truer colour can be seen from our last game:

Newest stuff down at the bottom.

It was a good game, but kind of petered out at the end - the mercs could have mopped up both the cultists and probably the LuftWulfenSturmenTroopen[1], but they cut a deal with the cultists instead. The sailors were mobbing the T. Rex, but dodging well enough to mostly not get mauled, and had actually managed to inflict a few injuries on the beast - including one with a pistol, in a fantastic feat of lousy DR save rolls from the GM!

Do you have closer pictures of the mastodon skull and the suspension bridges?

No and yes. The suspension bridge wasn't used this time, it was for the previous adventure.
