Yakumo class Heavy Cruiser Nef Photos leaked
« on: February 23, 2009, 10:09:41 AM »
As Thejammedgatling did such a great little spys taking pictures story i thought it only fair to release some pictures of my latest Japanese Nef.

The Yakumo Class Heavy Cruiser 3rd rate ship of the line Mars Pattern 1903

Crew : 80
Armament: 2 Turrets to both port and starport each mounting Medium snub nose cannon.
2 forward facing turrets each housing 2 Heavy snub nose cannon
4 Bombs (2 located in each bay)

Full specs to be released once translated.

Anyway onto the pics

(They are work in progress pictures so sorry to disapoint anyone if they were expecting finished pictures.)

Carefully Hidden behind the Mikasa Patrol Nef.

The ship uncovered

A closer look of the bomb bays.   Armament to be added.

A couple of shots with the Mikasa to help give an idea of scale (its a 6, x 2.5' table)

Thanks for looking.

Looks like there is a massive Nef arms race going on at the moment.

Where do you go from here?

I have a few plans in mind.   The Scale Battleship is still on the cards and as the actual Aeronef Aircraft carrier model is basically an addition to the Battleship.  So basically I can have the same base design with a removable landing strip.
There are also a few more of the Japanese smaller ships I would like to do, a further 3 different ones to be exact.

There is also a few other nation ships I quite fancy having a go at... but more on that after the Japanese fleet is done.

I must admit building Nefs is rather contagious.  This one isnt even finished and I am already sketching out plans for another.   :D

Amen to that. I didn't even play VSF, and I still got hooked into building 'nefs!

IF I might ask, what is the hull made out of? I've been thinking about building a flying gunboat for the US Navy.

I'm not much of a fan of aeronefs (dirigibles are the future!), but I must say this is mighty impressive.
Out of interest, how the devil are you planning to store the things?

Oh No....

I have just finished the 1/300th scale model of the Mikasa, two articles with Bill, Editor of TMP (1st. modelling and 2nd. painting) should be up on workbench soon.  And I thought that would be it!  Now I'll have to review this decision.

Im using Foam core and cardboard so they are very lightweight.   The decking is all balsa wood.

Im rather fortunate in that respect.   We move to a 50 acre block at the begining of the coming month.  6 bedroom house with additional 2 bedroom granny flat next door.   Its a lot of room for the 3 of us so have access to a rather large games room and a decent sized storage room purely for my hobby.

But aeronefs look easier/quicker to build : the hulls are basically straight sided (I realise there are lots of angles, but they aren't curved. Having built some sailing ships I've found curved hulls to be a real pain to cut out)
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

Rabbitz - they look absolutely awesome.
You should consider sending in a "how to build aeronefs" article to one of the glossy wargames mags (with blueprints).

Dadi & Piombo have done a couple of articles by LAFers.

I don't know what this is used for (what's a nef? Why is it there? Do we need them?  :D ), but it is brilliant!

Bah! You heavier-than-air fanatics will never be convinced, will you? Heavier-than-air machines will never fly; it's absurd to think otherwise. The lighter-than-air craft will always rule the skies...

What else are plastic drink bottles designed for?   :D
