LAV variants?
« on: February 08, 2017, 08:20:31 PM »
I've been following a couple of discussion threads on possible 28mm-compatible LAV IIIs for modern Canadian forces - very exciting to see what is (possibly) coming soon, such as a potential 1/50 scale Empress LAV III.

In terms of taking the available Stryker and LAV-25 models and modifying them for Canadian use, I've poked a bit around Google and Wikipedia for some basic information.  Can anyone check my ideas here:
  • Coyote, LAV-25 and ASLAV are 2nd generation LAV vehicles.
LAV III and NZLAV and Stryker are 3rd generation LAVs.
3rd gen LAVs are larger than 2nd gen, so a LAV-25 can't really pretend to be a LAV III.

Are there significant differences between a Coyote and a LAV-25?  (by significant, I mean noticeable at 1/56 scale).

Can anyone point me to an easy to follow comparison of the different LAVs?

Thanks in advance for any info you can share!

I painted all the LAVs and Australian kit for GHQ.

Pretty good selection and ways to tell them apart.

Thanks, Grant.  Are there any side-by-side comparisons?  For example, an ASLAV next to a LAV III?

Cheers

Will

A Coyote and a LAV-25 are VERY similar, at least in 28mm. The Coyote is a reconnaissance vehicle, with a large pole mounted observation device

A LAV 3 and an ASLAV are different in that they are both MOWAG Piranha hulls, but the ASLAV is 6x6, and the LAV3 is 8x8, and visibly different. There is also an ASLAV PC Variant, which is the Personnel Carrier, which has no turret, and a raised rear end for the compartment. It would be equipped with an RWS. There are also LAVs with RWS systems instead of turrets.

Tankograd ANZAC book shows ASLAV is 8x8.

For what it is worth, there is a description of the Coyote differences on Wikipedia.

Thanks, Alex and smurf.

I think I can get away with saying Coyote=LAV-25.  As I understand it, the mast will only be deployed when the vehicle is halted (and there is an alternative to have sensors on a couple of remote tripod wired back to a halted Coyote).  Maybe take a LAV-25 and scratchbuild a removable mast for when the sensor array is needed for a scenario.

ASLAV, as smurf says, is 8x8 in all the photos I've seen, but is smaller than LAV III.

Apologies, you're absolutely right, I made a typo - ASLAV is 8x8 as well, but the ASLAV is the recce version and looks pretty different in hull shape to the LAV 3.

Happy to help!

The ASLAV comes in a whole range of types, ambulance, 25mm bushmaster turret, carrier etc.

There are three hull types,

I thought I'd replied to this. Huh.

Here's a useful link http://www.primeportal.net/apc/dan_hay/coyote/index.php?Page=4

I use ASLAVs as proxies for my Coyotes patrol in 1/72nd scale
Two car patrols. One has the telescoping mast, the other has the sensor pack on a tripod for remote set up

The major difference I can see is the boxy thing behind the rear wheels on the Coyotes instead of the propellers on the LAV 25

And you can hide all kinds of minor hull differences with enough stowage!
