Evil Dave's Arena Rex
« on: February 14, 2017, 08:02:19 PM »
I bought a few figs at a local con the other week. Pretty nice looking models. Apparently they're having a painting contest for Adepticon so I started in on Lupa.

Her skin is done, and I started blocking out the other colors. Thoughts so far?

Exceptional! Not only does the flesh blend seamlessly, but I really, really like the dark red hair...looks real. Good luck with the contest.

The hair was actually an accident. I got some flesh wash on the white primered hair and thought it worked really well for a red-head base coat. Coated all her locks a few times and I wasn't disappointed. It was Coat d' Arms Chestnut Ink Wash, in case anyone's interested.

Very nice job on the skin and hair!  SO this is an Arena Rex miniature?  I've always thought the minis were exceptional, but no one around me seems to be interested in playing.

Thanks. Yep, she was a KS exclusive, but they had some for sale at CaptainCon. It's a pretty quick game with 3-6 minatures per side. Buy in is 60-120 as the figs are expensive.

I finished up Lupa's skin and hair last night. I still see a few places in these pics that I want to go back to.

I also painted up her skirt, shirt (although those highlights are pretty much washed out), leather and brass too.

The fur, and wrappings are next, as well as the hammer.

I tried something new on the hammer, some high contrast metal. I'm not happy with it. Pointers/comments/thoughts?

It looks decent to me.  What is it that you're not liking about it?

Thanks guys.

I think what's bothering me about it is a combination of the lack of gradient (metal paints are a pain to blend, at least mine are for me) and the direction of the gradient. I'm not really sure which way the gradient should be going on each face, and trying to have dark corners on one edge match up with light corners on other edges isn't possible on a cube.

I think I'll try tilting the gradient pictured 45 degrees or so clock-wise and trying again with the blending.

realized that I never posted finished photos of Lupa. At some point I still might go back and do some finer highlights and do something with the pelt, but she's done enough to sit on a shelf for now.
