Sicilian/Magna Grecia Hoplites
« on: April 03, 2017, 06:38:03 PM »
For a Punic Wars project, I started some hoplites. They are made from Victrix Hypaspists with bits from the Successors kit.

Hoplites did fight in Sicily especially in Syracuse.

More on the workbench.............

Thanks IWN :)

I have four more nearly ready. Obviously painting them before multi-basing. Unit should be 32 models.

I like how they look as unit yet they are not uniformed - good choice of  colours and shield transfers.
Also, victrix macedonians are not the usual suspects for hoplites, but they look great (more hellenistic helmets than in greek hoplites boxes).
32 warriors per unit would be 4 ranks 8 files? What rules are You planning to use?

As you said 8 files 4 ranks. Rules for Hail Caesar - frontage of units is standard so I use 8 files for all block units but usually 2 deep. For a phalanx I'm going for 4.

The hoplites represent individuals banding together for a fight, thus the lack of uniformity, besides being fun to do! Also I'm using a sort of colour coding - I never do green, red, blue and yellow in the same unit - it unsettles my mind!

The greek hoplites have corinthian helmets and hypaspists phrygian ones, so the successor kit gave me a lot of options on helmets.

Second batch ready.  :D

I think there is no need for 4 ranks for a single unit. That way, I can do a second unit. Besides, as I'm using them for Hail Caesar, a light infantry unit (8 skirmishers) has the same stamina value as a standard unit, so 32 models would be too much.....

Nicely done.  We run some of our light infantry as 8 man small units so stamina of 4.   Been experimenting with bases of 2 figures on 40mm squares, spread out in line as skirmishers and in 2 ranks as formed light infantry.

For small units we halve, so light infantry small units = 4 models.

For cavalry standard unit 12 (frontage of 6 in 2 ranks), small units frontage of 6 in 1 rank.

The experiment you mentioned I've seen it in medievals. Good idea. :D
