Late Summer Grass Recommendations?
« on: April 06, 2017, 12:43:48 AM »
Hello, folks.

I would like to ask for your suggestions/recommendations on static grass suitable for late summer.  I've tried looking at what some online stores offer, but it's usually rather hard to gauge the colors and what the grass looks like on actual bases/scenery.  Also, if you know of any compatible late-summer grass tufts, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

P.S. Apologies if this is the wrong spot for such an inquiry - please move the thread to a more appropriate spot if there is one.
Now what is this whole life of mortals but a sort of comedy, in which the various actors, disguised by various costumes and masks, walk on and play each one his part, until the manager waves them off the stage?

Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by late summer grass - and where that is.  Could be anything from a rich, deep green color to a patch of mostly dirt with some 'blonde' left overs of blades of grass.  Here in California it's going to be long swathes of blonde grass, mostly.  Or rather black if after a good (or very bad) fire.  You've checked with Noch and Scene Masters, JTT?

I'm not able to recall the name, but there was a company that sold matts at 12" x 12" of California's golden grass.  I think the company is in Utah or Colorado (USA) now.  I found the product very useful - they also have a spring green and a summer green.  And dang if I can remember the name - ought to be asleep in bed.

edit: Grand Central Gems!   See what a night and a bit of sleep can do for the brain.  That is the company with the spring, summer, and California blond grass.  All useful within my collection.  Not sure if it is still available but double check there web site.

Plain static grass looks a bit bland and unnatural so I suggest you mix in some tufts. Army painter and Games Workshop (Citadel) make a good tufts for that parched, late summer look. You can also add an occasional sprinkle of fresh green indicating spots where water is available or a more robust type of vegetation.

It's bright green all year round where I live, because it never stops bloody raining.

I can second the vote for Scenic Express. Just received another $250 order from them, and everything matches the photos on the site. They carry 3 or 4 brands of tufts, static grass and the sheets Fifteens away mentioned.

Thanks for the very helpful comments, all.  Sorry a) for my initial lack of specificity and b) for my not responding sooner (was away from a computer for a while).  This is for my Second Bull Run project, so I am aiming for a high/late summer look we often get in meadows here in the eastern United State: somewhat browned and dried by the sun, but still with a green underlayer.  My big concern was that the colors in the photographs don't always match the actual product.  But since you've spoken so highly of Scenic Express' reliability, I've put in an order with them for grass and tufts. Between that and the stuff I've got left over from other projects, I think it will work out nicely.  Will of course post photographs once it's ready.

Thanks again!
