The 50 cent challenge
« on: September 03, 2017, 12:31:31 AM »
From time to time, I like to push myself with new goals. Being chronically short of funds, I decided to combine the 2..... lol

Just 1 rule:

Quote
Find something in the range of free to 1 euro (adjust to your local currency and use a round number) and change it into something suitable for the tabletop....be it a objective, scenic or other gaming piece. It has to be the main part of the build, you can add bits and greeblies no problem, but you must still be able to recognise it. And that is it.

Post a before/after shot when done :) That's it, nothing more, nothing less :)

I'll be keen for this. I probably won't follow through but I'll try!
I like the stuff you have already made.

That would be pretty tough in the US but I'll take a peek around the hardware store.

No goodwill or thriftstores around? Yardsales? Or ask aruond for broken toys on local groups? That is how I tend to get and find stuff atm.

We have dollar or 99 cent store chains all over the US, so it shouldn't be hard to find something. I've certainly raided those places for bits before.

If you extend the notion to garage sales and goodwill shops the like, the field gets wide open.
History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

Challenging! I'll be following this thread, searching for something suitable at the same time!

That was the idea, yes. Even the smallest rurual area here seems to have 1 or more 2nd hand stores nowadays. The 99cent stores I only see in the city, but I find the goodwill stores to be far more interesting hobby wise, you never know what you are going to find. Looking forward to what you will create :)

It's not unknown for me to rummage through the recycling (more intercept on route, than rescue)for materials for a project.
So I'll be watching with interest ,as its always fascinating seeing how people find inspiration for a new project.

This should be a fun challenge! Unfortunately, thrift stores around here tend to have higher minimum prices than the challenge's limit. I do have an idea, but forget what the sale price was...

Here in Australia Daiso is AU$2.80 an item and dollar stores are called $2 shops here. So I'll aim around that limit. Had a quick hunt today and current contender is a 1:16 (or something) horse toy that's screaming for a howdah or something.

That's a cool idea! I love recycled and scratch-built stuff.

I recently found this interesting bit of packaging. It came with headphones and is a bit damaged but nothing that can't be fixed. It would probably be ideal for some sci-fi building in 10-15mm, but I'll try to find it a use for 28-32mmm gaming.

I found a Star Wars action toy at a drug store ( Kruitvat ) recently. Normally priced at 6.99, discount price 2,99 but as the packet had been opened, a spear was missing and closed after the ticket price was 1 euro. I hope this will be allowed in the challenge  ;).

If it cost you nothing and up to 1 euro, then yes, go right ahead!
