Ultimate Alliance Project Log
« on: September 06, 2011, 08:41:17 AM »
One of my favorite Super Hero video games has to be Marvel Ultimate Alliance. It may not have the best story, graphics or gameplay, but what other game lets me have Cap, Ghost Rider, Luke Cage and Deadpool wail on Doc Doom for the power of Odin?

Well... Super System I guess...

For my next big SS project, I'm going all out, dozens of heroes, the world at stake and this letter on my head not standing for France.

Watch this space and enjoy my last SS Display Game:

I agree! SS is the better way to play with sauperheroes (and heroclix the better way to have miniatures for supersystem  :D)

I hope to see more pics of your SS battles, your repaints and battle reports!

Ok, first minor update to prove to myself I'm going to stick to this. Three Supers finished last night (barring varnish):

Deadpool - The Merc with the Mouth, The Sensational She-Hulk and The Ever-Enigmatic Man-Thing!

Sorry about the poor quality of the pic, still figuring out the new camera.

More to come True Believers!

Need a little help from the gallery, for my big display game I want a 4-hero team that gives me a spread of characters. At the moment I'm thinking:

Captain America
Batman
Hellboy

and someone else. I've considered Optimus Prime, Judge Dredd and Robocop, but none of them seem right. I'm not keen to get another Marvel or DC character in there, but I may be tempted by Vertigo or another spin-off line.

Thoughts?

You seem to be focused on brawler types so how about...

Kevin Matchstick?

One of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? That might be pretty hard to procure a mini for, though.

Grimjack?

Yeah, okay, so I'm old.

Ok, first things first, a better picture of Wade, Jennifer and Ted:

Not happy with She-Hulk's face, but I'll take my time figuring out what to do about it.

Purchased a $10 Construction Site Toy Set, this is just what was in the right scale in the kit:

I'm not sure I'll use all of it (the vacu-form hills are pretty crummy) but for a tenner, I'm not complaining.
Also purchased were the new "Clockwork Thugs" from Fiendish Fabrications, with a few Eureka Victorian crims, I'll have a nice little crew for the Joker.

The idea of having a spread of heroes in the "initial lineup" is because of a couple of reasons:

1. Having different Iconic heroes (Bruce, Steve and Hellboy have all had movies).
2. In the Campaign version, after surviving a mission, a hero will be able to call upon help.

Each hero will have one or more "Affiliations", when calling in help, the hero can only get other heroes of the same Affiliation. (For example: Captain America (Avengers, SHIELD) can call on Iron Man (SHIELD, Avengers, Illuminati) but not on Green Lantern (JLA, Green Lantern Corps).
The problem with a TV/Film hero (I have considered the Turtles) is that I'll probably only have the one of them, I have considered doing a "Pop Culture" Affiliation, but I'm still not sure.

Pop Culture Affiliation Ideas:
Optimus Prime
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
John McClane
Robocop
Jack Bauer

- Ryu from Street Fighter (you have heroclix miniature)
- Son Goku or Vegeta from Dragon Ball (in Spain they are very Popular)
- Roscharch from Watchmen

Been thinking about this project a little, I really need to figure out what I'll be doing for the display game and what I'll do for the campaign. If I keep both separate, I can avoid stuffing one because of the other.

First things first though, my SS Project Manifesto (subject to change as I damn well feel like it)

1. No Points - In no Superhero media I have seen are heroes all on the same level, so why should I bend over backwards to make minis balance? Yeah, Hulk and Thor are more powerful than The Question and Green Arrow, but who cares? So long as everyone gets to play with a hero they like and have fun, there's no harm done. We're not playing for sheep stations after all.

2. Keep Fan Service Under Control - Yes, we all want to see the JLA and the Avengers team up against Luther and Kang, but I'm going to refrain from games like "Spiderman versus Batman!" because they're just an excuse for throwing dice whilst nerd-wanking. Admittedly, the game where I KOed Hawkman with Daredevil in one hit was awesome, but been there, done that.

3. Don't Buy Too Much - Aside from minis, I'm going to make sure the terrain and tables I build can be used for other games systems, I just don't have the space for every project.

Got some new bases from Fiendish Fabrications, so I may get some more heroes re-based this weekend.

Great project, keep up on the updates.

Can you tell me more about the "$10 Construction Site Toy Set"?

Not much I can tell you really, I picked it up at the local K Mart, it's full of pipe sections, wheelbarrows, fences, traffic cones, a couple of trucks, some light stands and plenty of tools.

All of which are perfect to be thrown or used as clubs in a SS game!

Just a quick update as I'm knee-deep in essay; finished painting Swamp Thing last night.

I'm thinking of a campaign scenario where Poison Ivy and/or Plantman are manipulating Swamp Thing and Man-Thing with swamp terrain and plenty of plants to attack people.

Will have time Monday to do a bit more work on this and maybe post some pictures.

Finally made a decent start on the terrain for this project; here's what I'm planning:

The table will be urban, because of my penchant for suspension of disbelief, it will be a relatively "sparse" area of city outskirts. There will be a few tenement houses, maybe a warehouse, parking lot and construction site.

The roads I'll be making from cork floor tiles, with sections of high-density foam as sections of paving on top. This will make the roads lower than the pavement and give me the ability to vary the tabletop as I see fit.

Need to clear off some workspace, so today I'm flocking the last of my WWWII stuff. Also rebasing some heroes and marking out some roads on the first few tiles.

Something different... What about Sandman (Morpheus that is. Not the dodgy Spiderman enemy).
Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

You mean Classic Sandman or the Neil Gaiman one? I have plans to get the Classic one for WWWII anyway.

After almost a week of rain, we've had a couple of sunny days here in Melbourne, and I've made the most of them. As well as undercoating a bunch of figures, I've managed to paint some fences and throw together a couple of objectives. Pics tomorrow, I've got a job to go to.  :?
