Ludus in a Tin, the Dutch version :P
« on: April 27, 2013, 07:45:08 AM »
Heya,

Inspired by 6milphil's thread, I decided to build a ludus of my own. I wanted to do this just in time for Salute, so that my friends and I could play a game of gladiatorial combat in the pub after a long day at Salute.

Believe it or not, the most difficult part of the entire project was to find a tin. For some reason, these are impossible to find in the Netherlands. Eventually, I found one at Schiphol (our national airport) in a tourist gift shop. This explains the god-awful exterior of the tin, definitely aimed at tourists looking for something typically Dutch...:

Anyhow, service from em4 was topnotch, very rapid delivery and Doug added the plastic tiddlywinks as well :) A quick order at Warbases.co.uk provided me with enough hexes to pave my tin. All in all, it took me about a week or two to assemble everything as life tended to interfere regularly. Luckily, it was finished in time for Salute.

Everything fits in the tin:

First game, we're all very tired :P This game plays really well with pints of beer. By the way, they are enjoying the game, even though it may not look that way ;)

Closeup of the arena itself, there is a door on the other wall, which is not visible here. Perhaps, I'll add splashes of blood later, but for now it works well as is:

Cheers
Jase

That looks brilliant! I like the fact that the tin hasn't been changed on the outside, it's like a top secret wargames gadget.

Aye, rekindles an old idea of mine to make a "in a tin" game with germies micro 2mm sci-fi stuff from GZG. Not sure what rules I could use for this but am adamant the weapon stats should have names like "kapow"  and "Zzzzap"

Love it! Reminds a bit of the great Steve Jackson games such as Ogre that came out in small pouches in the 80s and were so portable.  Mind you, this is several steps up in quality!  If you ever make it to Guam please bring this along.  I'll buy the beer!

I think that is what Sterling Moose did at Salute:

Great job!! Now to cover those tulips and windmills on the tin with a suitable gladiatorial mosaic.   :D

Brilliant!

I really like the idea of a complete and playable game that can be easily stored, transported and is instantly ready to play. I can also see a lot of potential for a similar lined tin or wooden box being useful scenery for other skirmish games set in a confined space.

Maybe for the Eureka Miniatures "And One For All" Three Musketeers rules or maybe something with Brigadier Gerard and a few friends fighting their way out of a tavern cellar or dungeon somewhere.

Can you give some tips on construction?

Did you glue the hexes and wall pieces directly to the sides of the tin or use something else as a lining?
What are the walls made of?
Is the stone texture just glue and sand?

Cheers,
Andy
