Previously I mentioned the Perry Minis that I'd bought to assemble the border guards.

The Warlord and Hearthguard will be in plate with swords and axes, the warriors in mostly mail with spears and the levies in mostly mail with crossbows.

Just a reminder that the minis are a mix of the HYW and Crusades ranges.

Some pre-greenstuff shots of the warlord (centre, open helm) and Hearthguard.  These are actually conversions of a polearms pack, as I liked the movement in the poses.  Fiddling around with forearms and hands, and swiping swords from the Crusaders and a few bits from the WotR plastics, helped the changeover to hand weapons. The cloaks - which still need a bit of tidying - are 25mm by 40mm oblongs of 80gms photocopier paper that has been crumpled (lots!) then shaped, fixed and hardened with superglue.

I've also started on the 16 warriors, with spears etc stolen from the WotR spares box.

The Crusaders are losing their shields, I'm slicing off the helmet nose guards, and I'll bulk up the helmets with GS.

These warriors will also get cloaks, which will help bring the two eras of minis together.

For the 16 warriors I'm including figures from the Crusaders with axes/swords set, conversion of which to spearmen allows creation of some interesting fighting poses.  For example, minis 2nd left and 2nd right previously had axes.

I'm liking this Steve  8)

Never thought is using paper for cloaks (but I'm not surprised you swamped them in superglue lol ).

cheers

Cheers James  :D

Here's an in progress shot of the capes, for those interested

The paper was extremely well crumpled (broken fibres being key), then tacked in place at front and back of neck as pictured, after which it was shaped into position before getting a dribble (NOT a soaking! But still take care re fumes) of superglue.  Idc it will be tidied up and have a little GS added where necessary.

Neither am I ;) lol

Inspired lunacy, I didn't think your idea of mixing the perry sculpts would work, but I think they look splendid :)

 lol They're NOT SWAMPED!  lol

Actually am hoping that the difference between the two ranges will vanish beneath the cloaks!  Thing is, I wanted flashes of chainmail coming out from under the cloaks and this seemed to be the only way to do it.

That's a good question..... And GS was on the list of options.

Basically, the primary answer is :  time.

I have 33 of these to do, pretty much all of which will be different, so a even a GS master for casting wouldn't have been particularly useful.

They will be getting some GS to tidy up and detail etc.

EDIT: I also want the cloaks to be thin .... Wool rather than fur.  If I'd used GS, to withstand handling I probably would have had to use it in conjunction with a structure from some thin sheet metal, which wouldn't have folded the way the paper does.

The secondary answer is : fun

I like trying out different ways of doing things  :)

Those will surely make a very nice force, quite an idea to use paper for the cloaks. Will you add some fur trimmings with GS for the leader and the elite on their cloaks?

Oh, woe to the man who ends up in the icy lake with a plate or chain armour  :'( Even though it's quite a refreshing thing to dip into a frozen lake during winter, I recommend to do it while having a hot (80C+) sauna nearby, not wearing a metal armour  lol

 lol

The back story for these guys is that they're not at home 'in the snow' so in some respects their armour compensates for decreased mobility, etc.

Fur trims for the warlord and hearthguard is a great idea.  I was going to give The Lord a fur collar but it wil now be trims as well.  :D

And where's the spreadsheet?

Well, as you asked......

(though its not much of a spreadsheet as it doesn't include calculations for capital  requirements, risk factors, anticipated return on investment, etc  ;))

.... my notes on project direction and components:
