Regarding the cloaks, metal will be too heavy for adding to plastic figures.
Agreed. You'll note I didn't say I would buy metal ones.  ;)

Quote
Resin I'm not too keen on as I don't cast with it myself (which raises costs) but I'll look into it and perhaps styrene as well.  And yes, woollen as well as fur cloaks: I see my pulp-Arthurians in mostly wool.
I would love styrene, I just assumed it was beyond possibility.

Honestly, with the skills you display in the rest of your hobby stuff... there's no excuse to avoid resin casting, IMHO. It takes a bit of work and experimenting to get to grips with it, but it's not rocket science. You can get decent results without too much effort, and if you're already experienced in casting metal, you cut out a big chunk of the learning curve.

Some progress with the first four greens, mostly to make sure the arms match up with the various torsos.

Testing was somewhat compromised by the head and arm parts being loosely held (by friction) or pushed out of place (by Blutac).  There also seems to be some distortion caused by the camera, presumably because I used the super macro setting, as it mostly effects extreme foreground stuff, like hands. More positively, the photos will help me identify what needs to be done next.

Fronts and backs:

(Not sure what's going on with the arm set that is 3rd from the left, as it doesn't look odd in the green. Also, in the photos it looks a lot better from behind)

A swap around of the arm sets:

Another swap around plus use of the two shields:

 :D

Some changes have been made and these will now be moulded in the next few weeks:

NB:Arms are held by friction only so as shown are an imperfect fit

I have started on the next set as well, though I am back into casting mode so they will be a lower priority for the next few weeks.  It'll be a similar set of four, with heads all wearing hats, probably one with spear (in right hand only), two with bows (nocking and drawn), and one with a sword/axe combo.  Probably no shields with this one though as the sprue space is likely to be taken by two pairs of arrow quiver and sword or axe belt combos that will need to be included for adding to the archers.

A third set of men has also been sketched out and a fourth set that will be women (especially so, seeing as last night I watched "Myn Bala: Warriors of the Steppe", which has a great female fighter).

I also fancy making a bear for some bear-hunting action, while I await the release of the Perry plastics.

Wow steve, your new SSS figures* have really forgotten civilisation and let themselves go. What a bleak gang of raiders your survivors will have to face. :D

I like the multipart nature to them, and their rugged complexions. Nice minis all round.

Cheers
Matt

*I know this is the 'other' thread but couldn't help myself. Too many genre's to keep up with you Steve.

Hopefully later this week.

I just got back from hols so have orders to get out as today's priority then to catch up on casting (restocks and releases) with - hopefully - the mould for these being made later this week.

 :)

A bit of terrain progress.

As I mentioned before, I am restyling some of my old FIW terrain onto 30 cm sq tiles.

Everything will get a coating of snow.

The four part mountain or cliff (it can be laid out in a number of ways) has gained some trees and the first of what will be much more gravel.  The clear spaces  will have a relatively smooth surface for trees based on CDs.

The gravel has been raised by tapping it into a smear of no more nails which is on top of scraps of foamboard.

Lots of trees, some yet to go onto CDs.

I have 12 tiles in hand, which will also butt up to the snowbound castle.

More terrain progress

Have added more gravel to one of the mountain quarters.  Next step will be use putty to add some larger boulders amongst the gravel then the snow texture before repainting.

A smaller rocky outcrop, glued to its new baseboard with first scatter of gravel over foamboard and No More Nails.  More gravel and boulders to follow.

At the moment, there are four mountain tiles, four tiles with mounds or outcrops, and four flat tiles. As well as the trees fixed to the mountain and outcrop tiles, there are 13 CD and 10 mini CD-sized bases, each with three trees for distributing around the flat terrain areas.

That is looking mighty fine.  Can't wait to see how it turns out.
What thickness board are you using and is there any warping due to the 'No more Nails'?
