Barbarian elasmotherium rider.
« on: August 15, 2014, 06:35:29 AM »
I bought an elasmotherium from deezee minis a few months ago for my grenadier barbarian warband. Then after perusing more of the barbarian range I saw the tiger hero rider and thought he would be a great rider for this beast. So after talking to Gary at Forlorn Hope I managed to get the rider sent (along with some half orcs and another barbarian hero). After some gentle shifting of his legs I managed to get them wide enough to fit onto the beasts back. Here are the initial pics. I'll need to add some sort of saddle, probably just a fur blanket and a basic set of reins.

cool idea! a rope or two or straps will probably be enough, with a nose ring and reins ?

pity the elasmotherium is such a poor reconstruction. Whichever way the expertise diverge, the legs should be longer, the proportion was different from modern rhinos

isn't there a better one to find?

I was probably going to opt for the nose ring option. Easiest to do well. I'm no expert on the prehistoric so I'm happy with it as is :) but for those after a more accurate representation I can see how it would be a problem.  Thinking of also getting one of their mammoths or maybe a couple and fully armouring them up. Thanks for the comments. :)

They did. A massive wooly rhino and I think also a mammoth, probably where I got my inspiration. Those are too expensive for my taste though and I was never really a fan of the barbarians hanging off the side of the rhino.

Have to say that forlorn hope were great in their service. The package arrived very quickly around the globe! And Gary has the patience of a saint.

yes, I am curious how You do the riding thing.
I have some old void saurian beasts that need to be made useful, and I need some inspiration

For beasts too big to get one's legs around, a camel saddle might be the best solution. For really big 'uns you need a howdah.

A little bit of progress made this morning. Found/made some bits and pieces from my bits box and sculpting stuff. Some very thin wire tripled over and wound into a rope. The three wires attached together looks much better than two. Also chopped up some cheap necklaces that I bought for using as chains and grabbed a few ring pieces (sounds so wrong) to use in the nose. The ring looks really good and I think makes it look tougher.

A bit more progress. I was going to make a full on saddle with straps and so on but a mixture of laziness and going a bit thematically I figured he would probably just chuck a blanket over it tie on his ropes to the nose ring and then set off. Next will be painting and then glueing it together followed by a little more GS to put the ropes to the ring and then a little more paint to cover that up.
