A question of size
« on: August 25, 2013, 05:33:01 PM »
It has probably been asked before, but can anyone tell me how the VBCW offerings of Muttonchop Miniatures and Musketeer compare with Artizan?

I find that Muttonchop are ever-so-slightly smaller than Artizan, but not much in it.
I mix the two quite happily.

Not sure about Musketeer as I only have the two female civvies (converted and painted by smokezombie for use as Crazed Nurses for my Asylum-Cheers, mate!  :D).

They would probably not be a fair comparison.

In this picture the two policemen are Artizan and the militia are Musketeer, I think they mix well...

I find they are all of a good size and mix well. Which is great as they are all amazing ranges. No pics for you though.

No worries Mason. I'd quite forgotten about those two lady's.

The Musketeer is of general Paul Hicks 28mm size, which in my experience means ever so slightly smaller than, Pulp Figures, Artizan et all.

Thanks guys. I'll pass this on the the group I wargame with over the Christmas break (this year's game is a VBCW setting, in which everyone has to put together their own unit)

AFAIK, the Artizan policemen are Paul Hicks' work as are the Musketeer and Mutton Chop miniatures. Nearly everything else of Artizan's offering were sculpted by Mike Owen and are slightly taller.

I'm a WW1 collector thats slowly being tempted into this genre. Can someone please tell me if my Great War Miniatures will fit size wise with Musketeer (I can feel myself giving in and having to get some soon) and the Policemen from Artizan ?

Thanks

Great War Miniatures are slightly taller than Musketeer but then we're not all the same height ;) (I use some Great War Miniatures in my armies).

Most are, but some of the earlier ranges are by Paul Hicks. Slight differences in style, but almost wholly compatible.

I have some Artizan and an array of Paul Hicks's sculpts and they are as different as real people are, so I have no qualms about mixing them.

I am wary of other ranges though, as they can often look starkly different and the 'people come in different shapes and sizes' argument doesn't excuse the sometimes radical differences in weapon sizes and 'build' of the figures themselves.

It's a case of trial and error in the main though and my 'opinion' is different to what others find acceptable, or not, as the case may be.

:)

In my experiences, most of the ranges that are commonly used for VBCW (Musketeer, Artizan, Great War, Mutton Chop etc etc) may vary slightly in size but are all compatible with each other.
Riever Castings are at the small end of the scale (next to the new Perry 8th army stuff) while Renegade Miniatures is at the larger end - so if you're fussy it might be worth keeping these figures in their own units.

It's his company, but Paul Hicks sculpted nearly all of the interwar miniatures (VBCW, IWI) and the great war British, the only exception afaik are the recent BUF cavalry sets.
