Need Plots, historical events
« on: May 20, 2010, 09:15:40 PM »
I need some plots involving French, British, and preferably someone other than Germans (only to be more interesting), during the 1920s-1939 for Pulp and interwar adventures.

Anyone have some interesting ideas?

Care to brainstorm?

Are you asking for ideas for adventers or for min info?

Where are you looking to set these adventures? What type of pulp games? Is this likely to be more relevant to the 'Back of Beyond' or 'Pulp' boards??

Off the top of my head there's; Thailand (Thai's plot to regain territory ceded to Britain and France), North Africa (Operations against the Senussi by Britain and Italy), Italy dabbling in the Balkans before WW2. The Spanish Civil War also provides a background for adventures all over the place, not just in Spain itself.

Great answers. I'm looking actually for some history to jump into.  Then, I'll deal with games. I'm thinking both pulp and BoB.

Irak (Iraq) during the period, Syria, particularly Damascus.

The long distance air races particularly the trans-Pacific attempts and the England Australia races.

Australia's little colonial experience in New Guinea (very interesting and rarely done).

The rise of Communism in China (The Long March is over 1935-36) - another epic event (whatever your politics)

The rise of the Indian independence movement (particularly Chandra Bose's group)

All sorts of nasty little range in Afghanistan et al.

A quick rummage through a few Wikipedia links of interest:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1920s#Wars
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1930s#Wars

And the rest of the 20s/30s decade indexes too, just that Wars are an obvious place to start.

China in the 20s/30s:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warlord_era
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_China#Modern_era

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongolian_history#Modern_Period
...which leads nicely into this very pulpish figure:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baron_Ungern_von_Sternberg
...who was by then a leftover from this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Civil_War

Follow links from those (in the great everything-linked-to-everything-else style of Wikipedia) and you'll start coming up with some good ideas for trouble to get your heroes involved in!

How about a public lynching in California in 1934?  Attended by thousands of people, including movie stars.  When the Sheriff requested the National Guard be called out, the Governor said instead,he would pardon the Lynchers.

A Longshoreman strike in the same year, in San Francisco, that resulted in multiple deaths.   With the army and the National Guard patroling the streets.

How about Moonshiners shooting it out from armored cars trying to get their product Al Capone in Chicago in the 30s.

Hundreds of Coal Miners having a miniature war with Mine  "Detectives" using machine guns in West Virginia.

All true events from US history, check out some of it in the Very American Civil War, or ACW2 listings.

I would make a link, but I am not that computer adept.

Look at the Armored Cars of Southern Illinois.

See you can do all these exotic strange fights without having your figures need to face yellow fever.  And you can still much of your Europe terrain for the US.

You could try a go at the Turkish war of independance
British, Greeks, French, Armenians, Turkish regulars and revolutionaries, no Germans

This is great, folks.  Thanks a bunch!

Gosh, I was a politics/history major in college.  I am a little shocked at how much I forgot about this era.
