Trolltooth Wars minis
« on: October 20, 2009, 12:15:04 AM »
Having read and reread this book tons of times over the years I finally want to get some minis together and maybe even recreate a few choice encounters on the tabletop.

Any ideas of where I might find suitable minis would be most appreciated - bit out of touch with fantasy as a result of a bit of a Dr Who obsession!

On Zharradan Marr's side -

Looking for rhinomen -

A big half-troll with mohican style hair for Thugruff the general

Lizard men and Black elves - but not gw types - more old school would be better

Kobolds and Gorians if anyone knows what these guys actually look like!

There were also some human mercenaries so any disreputable but uniformed types would be good.
The soulless ones look like skeletons from the front cover but are described as zombies throughout.... maybe more like this -

For Balthuss Dire's force I'd be looking for -

Hill Goblins and Wild Orcs - again more old school and evil looking than GW ones.

Eyeless archers - short litle nasties with shaggy faces and bows and arrerrs - I'm thinking cousin it off the Adams Family!

Giant 10 ft spiders and giant flies the size of hounds

Calacorms - which I think are 8ft tall lizardmen with two heads, armed with a huge scythe and look a bit like the ice warrirors of Dr Who- if that makes sense?!

Also - barbarians of the hills, fire breathing hellhounds and a multitude of other chaotics!

Not much to ask!

All suggestions welcome...

D&D Orcs?

My mate was well into FF in his younger days, I was more of a DragonLance fan. I think I still have a copy of Titan in the house somewhere.

Few more piccies to jog memories -

Lizardmen -

and the two-headed kind -

although there is a large two headed chap with a scythe in this illustration which I quite like -

Think I've got a few ideas for minis using BTD shadow elves, zombies of the swamp, goblins, 1/2 trolls and barbarians. Ral Partha have some nice trolls - including one with a scythe which could be a conversion candidate for the 2 headed chap above... Also nice hellhounds, and goblins. Some lovely orc lunatics at alternative armies.

Still struggling with eyeless archers (no piccies but think hairy goblins with shaggy faces and no eyes!)

Craggeracks apparently "resulted from the crossing of hobgoblins with trolls. They
have compact skulls and high, pointed ears over brownish-gray skin, and
long, slim limbs. They are in general slender creatures when compared
to most other Chaotic races, but they are no less strong and just as
warlike. They rarely see themselves as one nation or race, and prefer
to live apart from one another, in the tribes of orcs, goblins or
trolls. They are about as strong as the average orc, being about 5'9"
in height, only slightly taller than the average orc."

Found a little description about Gorians - Gorians: These bizarre creatures are tall and hairless, having
entirely black skin and feline eyes. They are not unlike some humans of
the southlands, but they have fang-filled mouths and hard, sharp talons
instead of fingernails.

Also came across some Rhino men from MSB toys - http://www.msbtoys.com/ but they are a bit too primitive in flavour  -need some armour and spears! Also a bit big in 40mm  - looking for 25/28mm.

Any other ideas aould be more than welcome!

Otherworld miniature?  Not exactly what you wanted, but you might be able to work them.

Would this fella be of any use?

I'd be willing to sell him if he was going to a good home…  lol

PM me if you are interested.

I think this would be the best basis for your Rhino-man:

He is from here:

Cheers for all the responses so far.

Loving the otherworld minis - the gnolls are brilliant and if the hobgoblins were a little cheaper they'd be perfect for a big unit of black skinned Gorians. Although I'd written the Kobolds off as looking a bit too cartoony at first I'm coming round to them, especially the commmand group and some of the nastier looking warriors... The Owlbear looks very tempting too! I have a feeling this project is going to be expensive and I'm only halfway through an old style citadel Wood Elf army bought solely through Ebay!

I'd looked at the rhinoman from impact before and might have to go for it - best match yet - have to get handy with the modelling putty and find some pikes somewhere! The little citadel chap (lovely paint job by the way) could work well as an honoured champion!!

Not had any experience with D&D minis - always been put off by prepaints but some interesting stuff.

Still looking for Eyeless archers and would rather avoid greenstuffing loads of goblins - not done much of it before!

These heads could help you if you're going down the route of converting Rhinomen.

Good spot! Already ordered a pack and sadly they're a little small - beautifully detailed and just what I'm looking for except for the fact that if I put them on an ogre or even a large orc's body it'll look a little pinheaded - gutted! The only other alternatives I've seen are a little expensive for the unit I'd like to assemble...

Hey man,
I have that book, I've had it since I was about 8! Shamefully, I have never read it!

I love the artwork you have shown, I'm a big Christos Achilleos and Pete Knifton fan. Knifton went on from GW and FF to go onto FLintloque I'll have you know! :)
