Picts for Conan games?
« on: September 12, 2011, 12:37:44 PM »
I am trying to find some figures that would be ok to use as Picts for a Conan game.

According to this quote they seem to be a bit like American Woodland Indians:

"They were dark-skinned men of short stature, with thickly-muscled chests and arms. They wore beaded buckskin loin-cloths, and an eagle’s feather was thrust into each black mane. They were painted in hideous designs and heavily armed."
- Robert E. Howard, The Black Stranger

I had a look at Conquest Miniatures and though these ones could be o.k.: http://www.conquestminiatures.com/500-009.htm

All the others have muskets, which don't fit in with Conan games.

Does anyone have any other ideas as to what figures (28mm) would be useful as Picts?

I would use foundry savage germans or copplestone cavemen.  Not necessarily Native American.  They however fit my idea of Picts.

When I think of Hyborian Picts I think along these lines:

So I'm thinking more tribal than European, possibly some converted Darkest Africa tribesmen with lots of woad.

One of these would look good leading them:

“A prisoner of war is a man who tries to kill you and fails, and then asks you not to kill him.”

We've got some figures from the Celtos range that we are painting for Conanesque types:

Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

Personally, I'm going to see if I can get a hold of some of the old Grenadier barbarians via Mirliton miniatures for some Hyborian Picts. I shall then (attempt to) use Green stuff to add feathers to their hair and shields and will paint them using native American style flesh tones with lots of warpaint - possibly blue (woad). I shall also use copper-type metallics on axe and sword blades, as that's what Howard says they were armed with - leader types will get Hyborian steel. However, I like the idea of Copplestone cavemen - a good call, that!

It'll be a while before I get these done, as I'm just prepping my first Conan/adventurer types (converted Reaper blokes and a Resina Planet 'Dalia' to be a Red Sonja/Valeria type) and working out what to use for Aqulionian border legion types who will face the Picts (and other nasties)...

I would be interested in seeing how your conversions turn out - I have zero modelling skill when it comes to this type of thing  :?

According to the "Hyborian Names" section at the end of "Conan the Swordsman" : "In Conan stories, Howard made the Picts a swarthy fold with an Iroquois-like culture; in other stories, he assumed they were dwarfish and Neanderthaloid."

So I have two ways I could go with the Picts.

Old Glory minis does Woodland Indians in 25mm and they're super cheap if you want to make hordes. If you join the OG Army, they're even cheaper!

They also do some "Natives" (polynesian style) that also work well for different tribes of Picts.

Well, I think I might use historical minis for these. Packs from Gripping Beast miniatures El Cid,and First Crusade ranges do fit the bill for mailed warriors on foot as in 'Moon of Blood', the Gunderland pikemen - I tend to see them as spearmen rather than true 'pike' men - wear mailshirts and steel helmets. The El Cid and Crusader ranges look great and are a decent size. An alternative would be to use West Wind miniatures Arthurian warriors - either armoured Saxons or Armoured Romano British warriors. I have loads of these in my WAB Arthurian armies and they are superb with a great separate head system. You could also use Artizan miniatures armoured Romano British warriors if that early Dark Age look appeals to you. These are fabulous models as well. Particularly good if you see Aquilonian border legions as being similar in style and role to Late Roman border legions...
