Picts
« on: February 18, 2012, 09:29:26 AM »
Hello chaps,

 I recently bought an an Pict army from a mate (cheers Mick :)),the Gripping Beast,Age of Arthur set. Very nice they are too,and simple to paint ;) Now I intend to do them in an very mannered de-saturated style,possibly tattoos and although I have the Little Big Man decals ,I'll try and paint (which I enjoy :o) as many shields as possible.  I'll probably paint one a night (there are 124) and enter some in the LPL
     Anyone have any suggestions?

 Cheers

Pics from Blackwolf, this will be a blast  :-* Which rule set are you going to use for them?

Try it with some conversions giving them late Roman armors and weapons, maybe a whole unit, Wild Roman Killers..

I would humbly suggest minimalist armour.  Use primitive pre-tartan paterns (plaid?).  Check out the infantry on the cover of this book, this picture is a personal favourite, hope the detail comes through enough.

Remember that REAL tribal/primitive tattoos are not strictly black or blue, depending on the age of them and the competence of the application they will be more subtle than the block colour or vivid blue swirls that you see usually.
Here's an example of a tattooed Bornean, obviously Picts would have lighter skin but the principle is universal.

Without coming down on either side of the tattoo opinion... while they fade in time to that above, if instead if 'body paint' designs were used they are likely to be far more visible and solid. Alternatively it might be a case of a 'body wash' over which bolder designs were painted.

I'll likely get beaten to death by some members for this, but my personal preference for the 'Pict look' would be;

 Cheers Prof. ;) Probably WAB,although they may just end up as a painting project :) I like the conversion idea too!
