steam horse, modelling question ...
« on: September 14, 2013, 04:00:35 PM »
WTF  :o it seem's impossible to find a decent 28mm steam horse .
mage knigth is "sh**t" , warmachine khador gun carriage horse may be a perfect base , but 16,50$ a single horse  >:(

any idea ?

Dans les situations critiques, quand on parle avec un calibre bien en pogne, personne ne conteste plus. Y'a des statistiques là-dessus.

Have you thought about using a Heavily Barded Horse, standing still? Someting like a Cataphract then modelling bits on to the more organic looking bits.

Depending on your starting model you may not have to do too much. Plus historical miniatures do tend to be cheaper. Look at some Persian Alexander style period.

Just a thought.

Can you be a bit more specific in what your looking for, including max price your looking to spend? Also, can you elaborate on why you dont like what ya dont like?
The MageKnight steam horses are pretty alright. I personally have a nice stable of them and grab em when i see them. So useful for many genres.
The Warmachine figs can be a bit pricey. An option would be to find some peeps that have done conversions on their gun carriage to NOT have used the horses. Maybe you can find a deal in there.
GW does a nice steam horse with engineer. Might be too pricey for you.
Depending on what you want your steam horse to look like there is always scratchbuilding. Someone on here did a kool looking steam horse out of spare parts and hoses and so on. Do a search.
If your steam horse is going to look like a regular horse int he end there are many choices out there already.
If your steam horse is going to look like a regular horse with say hoses added again the same choices as above just add hoses.
Your horse could not have 4 legs but say two wheels. A big wheel inside the body and a small one in the back for balance. Think of a Penny-farthing with the armor for a horse around it.
Another scratchbuild could use a barrel for the body of said horse and make some legs, neck and head.

So, what are you looking for?  :-)

Take one plastic horse.  Carve joint lines at every joint. Add small chimney.
Base in black. Drybrush steel. Pick out details in brass.
Voila! One steam horse. :)

Or use the GW plastic knights' horses as the basis for your conversion:
