And so the box was opened.....

....Actually it was a bloody nightmare and I ended up having to hacksaw the box from the outside of the mould.  Free of the box, the mould opened easy enough but the second pour of resin had clearly created some gases (I wasn't able to smell anything at the time due to the respirator) resulting in big bubbles.  Unfortunately the master broke as I removed it from the bigger of the two mould halves.

m

I had a try with one half of the mould and the hot glue.  The resin can't cope with the temp of the nozzle of the glue gun and contact results in damage and welding of the glue to the mould.  Also the mould needs a brush of petroleum jelly as a release agent.  Anyways, one aside of the cloak was made from the hot glue, though it is seriously imperfect as the glue was just dribbled into one half rather than inserted between the two halves under pressure:

Though far from perfect, the result is good enough to continue to the next step of this part of the project, which is to repair the damaged half of the mould and set both halves in a new mould box, using greenstuff.  After that I will drill the various in/out holes and attempt a pressure cast

Do you have a particular reason for going with this method of moulding?

You could just get some Oyumaru Modeling Compound - you heat this in near boiling water, then press it into / around the item you want to mould. Mostly this is used for single sided press moulds, but people have made two sided moulds.

Then you can just put green stuff into this to create the item. This method is good for a few items, not loads at a time.

James: Echo...echo....echo.....you are funny but resin casting isn't for me  :D

Fred: Thanks very much for the interest and suggestion. I've got the moulding material you mention and did consider a push mould for this but I need about 60 cloaks so it's a volume issue. I also considered metal (I have vulcanising and spin casting facilities) but that'd be too heavy for the plastics they're to be fitted to.  Vac forming was also a possibility but won't give the detail I want (thickness). So I'm playing about with other techniques: I've wanted to crack home injection casting for a while now but this is my first practical.  :)

So, last update for today - the mould has been repaired and seated into a new box:

I'll have a go at injecting tomorrow but if it doesn't work I'll probably park this experiment and move onto some other part of the WWW project.  ;)

Update on pressure injection with hot glue = big fail without more pressure to force the glue into the mould.   :(

I might just vac form a basic shape then greenstuff the depth and detail into that.

Shucks. Ho hum. Onto the next stage, which will be painting of the camp, waystation and lake for a Xmas game.  :)

Sounds like a more surefire plan :)
I might take a few vacformed cloaks off your hands myself if they turn out okay  :D

Just finished Joe Abercrombie's 'First Law' trilogy by the way. Thanks for the recommendation Doug - most enjoyable.
Imagine Tom Sharpe meets Conan The Barbarian by way of Gormenghast. Some derivative elements, but all brilliantly twisted into a very original, unexpected and entertaining new form...  Highly recommended :)

(And yes, the battles in the northern snows have a definite 'Winter Wreaks Wild' feel to them... )

I have just started Best Served Cold, as it is a stand alone book, with a view of adding the others to my own crimbo list if I like it.
What I have read so far makes me feel hopeful.

I'm glad you chaps are enjoying them and I would also particularly recommend The Heroes which is set after the Trilogy and features some of the characters from those books.

The Heroes has particular appeal for wargamers. It is centred round a battle in The North which is why it is relevant to this topic (my justification for what may appear to be a thread-jack).   :)

Wow! Another truly inspirational project. The subject matter is a bit close to home for me (being in the middle of a six month long Canadian winter), but I'll return to this thread in the summer when the snow has melted here!  lol

The first thing that came to mind when looking at your scenery and forces involved was the 1987 Scandinavian film Pathfinder (Ofelas/Veiviseren). It's well worth taking the time to track down and watch, and might provide some scenario ideas.

Thanks Andy (and for the PM too).

I flicked through it on YouTube - it looks great and I am going to hunt out the DVD - it made me feel cold just watching it!

Ps: more on this project as soon  :)

The frozen lake looks great, hopefully we can see it in use in a game soon.  :)
