So with a couple of new sets of Ancient rules on the horizon namely Infamy Infamy from Too fat Lardies and Clash of Spears from across the pond, I've started painting up some figures to be used with them.
First up are 8 Auxiliary infantry, very nice plastics from Victrix (though I am a bit worried about the spears being a little fragile) and shield transfers from LBM.
As I paint more figures I'll post them on this thread as it keeps me motivated, hope you like them :)

Superb painting! Great job!
Ref concerns about plastic spears: I'm doing a Republican Roman force for Clash of Spears and am replacing all pila, javelins and spears with steel ones. I find the typical 'North Star' (etc) steel wire spears great for throwing/thrusting spears and I use ones intended for 15mm figures for pila and javelins - I'm just going to paint these latter types to look like they have a long iron shank which will work fine for 4th century BC Romans - wouldn't be so good for imperials of course as you wouldn't get the hefty weighted part.
Steel spears would work ok for auxilia though if you were worried about plastic ones snapping...

Verrry nice, ditto detail on the shield backs.
Auxillia are on my shopping list, and I'll be replacing the plastic spears. I just completed a half century of thier EIR and managed to break a couple of pila (admittedly thinner than those spears ) ranking them up - sausage fingers dont help, but over time...
For the Gauls (British opponents) I went with the Warlord steel spears here (https://store.warlordgames.com/products/50mm-metal-spears-50) cut down for for javelins, and the slightly thicker North Star ones, here (https://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=536), for spears. Both are 50mm long and work well with 28's. Only thing you might not like is the very industrialised uniform spear points everyone ends up with.

There has been progress, another 8 figures. I'm going to do 24 of these, a group of 8 skirmishers and about a dozen cavalry along with various 'big men' to lead them :)

Last figures of 2019, another 8 Auxilia taking the unit to 24.
About 230 28mm figures this year which is good for a slow painter like me.
I also built and painted various bits of terrain so all is well.

An eight figure skirmish unit for my Auxiliary force, Aventine miniatures which fit in quite nicely with the Warlord plastics.
A mobile force of heavy-ish infantry and skirmishers I think I'll do some cavalry next to support them

Some side on close ups, when you think of the balancing act performed by these chaps along with trying to control a horse and fight with their weapons it's no wonder they were used mostly as messengers and scouts rather than battlefield cavalry

Theres a little nubbin on the left arm that I mistook as some sort of bracelet but I think is supposed to be placed in the boss on the back of the shield.
I've placed the hand in the boss so the rider can use it to punch his shield out at a mounted enemy (well that's my story and I'm sticking to it lol)

First figures for March are a couple of rank and file Roman cavalry men, I've got 12 of these to do so I'll work my way through them slowly over the coming weeks.
I've changed the spears on these as they seemed more fragile than the infantry ones

Yeh I get that, I dont mind them. If i had one criticism with this set it's that two of the horses have a very similar pose, i prefer more variation coz it gives the unit a better sense of movement.
But the ears are weird though ;)

You should take a look at Training The Roman Cavalry: From Arrian's Ars Tactica by Ann Hyland - she's an experienced horsewoman and essentially says that the Roman saddle was eminently practical - with the possible exception of mounting where the absence of stirrups made things harder. The book discusses the equipment, she tests a modern copy of the saddle, and looks at the Roman cavalry evolutions and training from the perspective of a rider rather than a military historian. Here's another couple of Roman cavalry men, 6 down 8 to go.
In the new Infamy Infamy rules that are on the way from TooFatLardies Roman cavalry units have 6 figures so mine will include an Optio and 5 men but I'm also doing a Decurion, and a mounted Centurion for the infantry element of the force.

Final figures For the Romans for now are two more mounted figures for my Auxilia force.
Another Optio and a mounted Centurion finishes the mounted element of my little army which amounts to 2x6 figure cavalry units, 3x8 figure infantry units and 1x8 figure skirmish unit.

Some fine work Jeff. It has inspired me to get some of my Foundry EIR out of the "Big Box of Neglect" rather than rebase stuff I have painted.

Cheers mate, I had a good look at some actual photos of Wolves and the first thing I noticed was they are a mixture of browns and greys in the main and rarely one straight colour :)

Finished another unit of ten noble warriors for my Silurian Britons, these along with the first unit are my force's elite.
Best armour and weapons, best clothing, all armed with swords and nice crested helmets.

The plan is the the regular warriors will not have mail, half of them will have helmets, half will be armed with swords the other half spears. Painting wise I tend to paint checks, plaid, and stripes with the odd plain piece of clothing, on the regular warriors there will be more plain pieces of clothing in evidence.
All the warriors will have limed hair and the odd cloak will also be used.
The levy will have no armour at all, all will be armed with spears, only half of them will have unpatterned shields, and they will use the heads with the scruffy hairstyles and mostly plain grubby looking clothing.
If I get away with it there should be no doubt as to what each unit represents. I'm also going to convert 12 of the warriors into slingers :)

10 more Celts painted, this time your 'average warriors' so no mail just the odd helmet and half of them have spears, and no fancy helmet ornaments.
There'll be no mixing these up with the elites I painted earlier.

May I suggest, for the back of the shields, a light/mid brown with a dry-brushed lighter brown.
Follow that, when dry, with the (plank?) lines drawn with a sharp pencil,
& a few finer/lighter grain lines also with pencil. The higher the 'B' content the darker the
line will appear when you spray varnish over it. I find this a LOT easier to control than a brush.
I hope this helps, or at least is of some use/interest to you.

Thank you, I will certainly give this a try. I hadnt thought of using normal pencils before, I have heard of people using mapping pens but I havent used them myself. I'll get a variety of B pencils and have a play around :)

I don't know about you, but I most definitely am old.
When using the pencil(s) remember to keep a sharpener handy.
The higher the lead content in the pencil, the quicker it goes blunt.

While it likely varied, what's known about Celtic warriors is that their sword scabbards were iron with a bronze front in the earlier period and amongst the British and completely iron later on so most scabbards should be iron or bronze coloured with colour mostly being from small bits of enamel decoration, often red though white and blue would also be expected. Some wealthier nobles probably used silver, gold and other high status materials but would be rare.
The Gauls had iron and sometimes bronze belts I think until around the 3rd century bc then went increasingly to leather but the eastern Celts continued to use iron belts into the first century ad. It's possible the leather belts may have been coloured.

Some Tribal cavalry for my Silures warband, this time Crusader sculpts which are showing their age a bit now, I sculpted a thumb and 4 half fingers to the right hand as it was missing on my figures and I also did head swaps on 3 of them for a bit more variation. Heads and shields from Victrix plastics.

The figures with helmets are the original sculpts and the figures without helmets have Victrix heads. By doing this and then painting the clothing and horses all different colours I was hoping it gave a nice irregular feel.

I think you have hit the perfect note between bright and muted with the 'plaid'. which having painted a load of Gripping Beast Welsh in the past is not an easy mark to reach 8)

I have Crusader infantry Celts and they mix well with Victrix (of course with Victrix shields and transfers, with some of my own designs)...
I have a plan to buy Crusader mounted warriors (as yours), but not sure how they fit with Victrix ones (I have 2 units of Victrix armoured cavalry).
Could you please make one comparison picture of Victrix and Crusader mounted Gauls (horses too)?

Thanks for the kind comments guys, with all the different colours and patterns I was worried that the figures would look to 'busy' so tried to paint in a toned down fashion.
My painting style is usually bright and clean, so it was a case of using mostly muted colours to try and keep the brightness toned down without using washes and dry brushing.
I only used Crusader for the cavalry because I wanted unarmoured mounted skirmishers rather than heavy cavalry. Victrix are all armoured and will probably make an appearance at a later date.
Crusader are much smaller, especially the riders. It doesn't bother me, I'm not mixing them within units and it helps with the young lads skirmishing on mountain ponies effect

The two horse poses are rather stiff in comparison and the riders with capes take a bit of work to get the capes to sit on the back of the horses. The underside of the capes have two depressions to go over the rear saddle horns but these tend to be filled with excess metal. The riders are very nice with a variety of clothing and hairstyles, they match well with Aventine's Galatians.

The riders are very nice with a variety of clothing and hairstyles, they match well with Aventine's Galatians.

I dont have any Foundry figures but my understanding is that there are at least 2 sculpting teams for Perry Celts.
The Perry brothers have done the earliest range which are quite small and probably the figures people relate to as 25mm.
Rob Baker has sculpted a range which are I believe larger and would fall into the 28mm bracket.
I'm not sure but I think Mark Copplestone may have produced some figures for Foundry which if true would also fall into the 28mm bracket

Copplestone produced four of the Gallic Cavalry sets and one infantry set, the rest of the Gallic range was done by Baker. These are all large 28mm that fit with larger figures like Victrix and Crusader. They are listed under the Gauls range. I don't have any of their chariots but the cavalry horses are huge like Victrix and Crusader's horses.
The Perrys are mostly smaller but some are chunky enough to use as shorter warriors alongside bigger 28mm, their chariots and cavalry are too small to use beside larger 28s. They appear as Ancient British Celts or similar on the site.
The third group are done by Dave Gallagher and appear as Continental Celts. They are mid way in size between the other two but match the Perry Celts more in size and style, especially their horses and they use the same chariot as the Perry Celts.

Beautiful looking. Checks & clothing patterns are very good,
but for me the shields make them superb. Shame it is your opponents
whose see them most. Maybe it will distract them from your battle
plan.

Thank you all for being kind enough to comment and for the information on the Foundry Celts. The shields are LBM decals which sounds like a bit of a cheat but believe me cutting them out and painting the edges to match is an art in itself lol.

Really subtle plaid- just the right tone. You have 100% avoided the too bright and garish 'trap' that one can easily fall into when painting such fabrics.
Those Crusader Dark Age Irish stone chucker's came in very handy for me when I did one of the WSS covers a few years ago. Basically checking rocks as Marion's Mules marched past! I'm not sure it was what the editor was expecting :)

Beautiful miniatures once again though the Druid is more likely a Roman Haruspex. They typically sacrificed sheep and chickens to determine the future by examining the entrails. The Romans inherited the practice from the Etruscans. The figure could also be a Greek priest of some kind.

Two units of skirmish slingers for my Celtic force. I used the half dozen shields left over from the Tribal cavalry I painted earlier this year and had some hands holding slings in my bits box (never throw anything away folks)
I reckon these will be my last figures this year. :)
