This looks like it could be fun. Lots of VSF eye candy to be had me thinks:

Interesting.
I hope it doesn’t go too steampunk though :?
-
Reminds me of Netflix's Penny Dreadful.
-
By Joss Whedon no less. Looks interesting.
-
Looks good, thanks for the heads up :)
-
Looks interesting. I'm not going to pay yet another streaming fee to watch it though.
-
Hope someone with HBO tells about the non-draughted convenience.
Doug
Edit: And maybe a bit like Carnival Row?

I believe Whedon left and/or was fired from the show. Made me sad he's among the best a working with an ensemble IMO.
In any case excited to check the show out.

Is this going to be just another show of Victorians with 21st century “values” and “sensibilities”, aka just another darn costume party?

So what if it is. It’s VSF :)

And nothing wrong with that :)

Shouldn’t it be obvious by now that not everyone wants yet another modern 21st century story told in costume? And that some people want an actual period piece for a change (even with the occasional anachronistic gadget thrown in)?
Flavors were made for a reason. So if this is your fare of choice, enjoy. I’m just hoping for more.

Perhaps a small, vocal minority don’t want that and perhaps a larger proportion of the viewing public do. It’s not out yet though so no point in complaining until it has been released for all to see :)

Complain? I didn’t complain. I asked a simple question to those who have been following the development ... if they were really following.
Just like slapping some cogs and gears to a hat (or a terrain piece) doesn’t automatically make it VSF, adding period costumes to actors on a show doesn’t automatically make it Victorian (or VSF).
It’s not that hard, really.

Yes you did ;D

“Yes you did. ;D “
In your world. Or dreams. :D
I can’t complain about what I haven’t seen or experienced yet. But I can ask questions about it. Which is exactly what I did, hoping the replies would herald a refreshing new trend.
If you want to make something bigger out of the questions, knock yourself out.

I'm always game to watch some VSF and hope for a good entertainment value.
Heck, I've watched the Sharpe series several times over the years; it's great background viewing whilst trimming figures, no matter how un-Regency period the characters are.

Trend of what?

Ok Gents time to calm it down. This is a civil and friendly board please desist from the snipings and argumentative behaviour.

Will do :D

Not knowing anything more about it than what I've seen in this thread.
Then given the 'normal' views of that time where 'rascist', 'sexist' or even misogynistic (women getting the vote, by Gawd sah are you a madman) and class based, (I know my place) I would imagine it will be what you might view as a costume party, with perhaps only a moustache twirling villain being what might be considered a representation of Normal from that time.
Unless there able to do something like Lovecraft County where they have those things presented in a context of the storyline.
So possible it'll be realistic representation with some steampunk added on, but I'd be expecting what you call a Costume Party is probably more realistic.

That’s what I was afraid of. Just another costume party. I was hoping that more effort would be put into period productions for a change.

When dealing with controversial aspects of historic social convention, It's difficult to say how to represent those aspects which are offensive in the context of our modern views and would it be difficult to watch if we did.
How would we feel if at the end of Zulu, if as Stanley Baker and Michael Caine were talking how they couldn't face this butchers yard again. There was an occasional crack of a gunshot (or even a bayonetting) in the background as a wounded Zulu was finished off and the body thrown like a sack of potato's into a shallow unmarked mass grave.
It's not something that this is the place to discuss, but how history is presented in the context of drama is a difficult one. Until we start to see how responsibly actual social record is presented by historians balancing the negatives and positives and that soaks into historic drama then I would suggest Costume Dramas will continue largely as the norm.
So if you can't enjoy an historically edited version of a fantasy world then best pass. You may find its something like Man in the High Castle or Enemy at the Door and be pleasantly surprised but as those tend to be the exceptions I would adjust expectations accordingly, real history often takes the backseat to reel history after all.

Yep. My mistake is that I expect more from modern writers, instead of much, much less.
