Title: Raglan's Hundred Years War
Post by: Lord Raglan on 27 January 2022, 09:41:10 PM
This is a brand new project for 2022, using the fantastic 28mm ranges from Claymore Castings, Antediluvan Miniatures, Perry Miniatures, Front Rank and Footsore Miniatures. The plan is to showcase the collection and feature battle reports of the games as we play them.

English Longbowmen from Evesham. You can tell they are from Evesham by the miserable look on their faces, they really are wretched souls.

Hundred Years War - French Men at Arms. This unit is a real mix and match of Claymore Casting, Perry Miniatures, Black Tree Design and Crusader Miniatures from North Star. I think medieval units look best with lots of variety to the poses.

Given the extensive numbers of figures in your other projects , how many hundreds of figures are we talking about.  :D :D :D

Love the muted tones they look very realistic. Wish someone would do English longbowmen that look bedraggled and suffering from dysentery.

Medievals always looks good with lots of flags! Is there any evidence whether bowmen and crossbow units would have flags, and if so what type? I assume the nobles would fight with the melee infantry/maa units, rather than led missile units?

The battlefield is set for the next HYW game, overlooked by the Abbey of Jumièges in Normandy. Possibly an English raid on the French coast led by the Black Prince.

Very nice table setup.

I might have asked you this before, perhaps even earlier in this very thread..... but I'm interested in your shed, as someone who plans to get something similar one day. So a few quick questions - how big is the shed, how big is the table setup you've got there in the pics, and what's the shed like in the winter (would it be worth insulating?)?

We built ShedHQ approximately 8 years ago, it's 25ft by 14ft, so it's able to house a table which is 12ft by 5ft (it was 6ft wide, but I started to get back problems after playing long games). I have not insulated it, but I do have a greenhouse heater on during the winter months, we have not experienced any issues with damp.

Sir Archibald Douglas was a Scottish nobleman and warlord during the Hundred Years War. He is sometimes given the epithet "Tyneman" (Old Scots: Loser), but this may be in reference to his great-uncle. This is one of my favourite retinues in the collection.

King Edward III of England. The first phase of the Hundred Years' War between France and England lasted from 1337-60. It is sometimes referred to as the Edwardian War because it was initiated by Edward III, who claimed the French throne in defiance of King Philip VI of France.

Damn that's a big shed!
I was looking at 20ft by 10ft, the bigger it is the bigger table can fit in it of course... All depends on the size of the garden.

It certainly looks like there is a lot of amazingly well-painted figures (hint: group shot)...

And I love the use of more 'dated' figures for the Welsh contingent. Were they more behind or is that more artistic licence?

James 2nd Earl of Douglas and Mar was an influential and powerful Scottish magnate. In 1385, Douglas made war with the English and began raiding the areas around Carlisle and Durham. In 1388, he led the Scots at the Battle of Otterburn.

Each of the Captains has his own character card with a command ability and trait (these can convey both positive and negative effects into the game). The cards are a bit big at the moment, so hopefully these can be condensed down to smaller than playing card size.

The initial French cavalry charge weathered the arrow storm and punched the Welsh Bowmen back in the centre. In retaliation, the English men at arms counter attacked and destroyed the French in the centre, capturing the Marshal of France in the engagement.

After a couple of turns of hand to hand combat, the English men at arms began to get the upper hand and destroyed the two remaining French cavalry units. They subsequently reformed lines, ready to receive the French MAA on foot who were trudging across the muddy fields.

By the time the remaining French infantry made it across the muddy field, the English were well prepared and buoyant on their earlier victories. As a result, they quickly broke the back of the French and the battle ended a resounding victory for God, Saint George and King Henry.

King John the Blind (10 Aug 1296 – 26 1346), was the Count of Luxembourg from 1313 and King of Bohemia from 1310 and titular King of Poland. He is well known for having died while fighting in the Battle of Crécy at age 50, after having been blind for a decade.

My first Wargames opponent (Oscar/ Steve O'Leary, I hope you are
still out there wargaming. Whiggy) had a unit of Welsh with a 'Dagsman'
i.e. a little runt armed with just a knife. It was his job to roll under the
enemy's horses & stab at them.
I don't know if such a 'troop-type' really existed, Steve always was very
good at pulling the wool over people's eyes.

I've just read the whole thread again from start to finish, its a lovely collection. What's really good is the sense of activity on each individual base. The way the cavalry are based give a real sense of movement as well. What base sizes are you using and what would you suggest isa good size figure wise for a unit?

The heavy infantry is based on 50 by 50mm bases with 5 figures per base.

The medium infantry/archer is also based on 50 by 50mm bases with 4 figures per base.

Heavy cavalry is based on 50 by 85mm bases with 3 figures per base.

May i ask what base sizes are you using?
Infantry, cavalry and command groups please.

I searched throughout this thread and did not see a reply to this question. It looks like 50mm frontages with 50mm depth for foot and 100mm for mounted but before I begin rebasing I would prefer to have this confirmed!  ;)

Many thanks to taking the time to post so many wonderfully inspiring piks for us all to enjoy.

John

Sorry I missed that question John

Yes all infantry are on 50 by 50 and cavalry are on 50 by 80

Hope that helps mate?

Absolutely it helps!

Of course it now creates a whole new problem - I need to paint faster...

Midgard - Hundred Years War. ShedHQ played host to James Morris last week, where we played two linked medieval battles. Absolutely great fun and thank you to James for making the journey over the Welsh border. I won’t do a batrep for these games, as James plans to write them up for a magazine article.

Pevensey Bay in East Sussex with Pevensey Castle sited just inland. When William the Conqueror invaded in September 1066 there were no defenders at Pevensey and the bay provided a safe haven for his fleet. Will the invading Franco-Scottish Host be so lucky.

Some shots of the Franco Scottish Host as they attempt to storm the beach (think Saving Private Ryan medieval style).

Raglan makes it on to the small screen with the latest installment from @mogsymakes.bsky.social's Midgard series on YouTube. James has done a great job of narrating his adventure to the Welsh Marches. Disclaimer: no Abergavenny sheep were harmed during filming 🐑🐏🐑

This is so good - Firstly, I'm really pleased to see Midguard being slightly adapted for 100YW
Secondly the chance to see Gareth's stunning collection again is another huge bonus. Now looking forward to the trip home to NZ in a few weeks so I can resume painting (copying even) particularly Claymore castings figures.

Fantastic, well done both of you
